Boating at Night
I just want to know if I'm being a worrywart or not. My parents live on a canal. My DH loves to fish. My dad got him a small boat to use. (It was given to my Dad for free.) My DH wants to use it to take out in the middle of the night to go across the bay to fish. To be honest, I am petrified about this. I think it could be very dangerous. I discussed this with him. He says that he won't go at night if I'm that worried about it. Am I being unreasonable? I would like to hear all perspectives. I don't like to be the kind of wife that is ordering her husband around, but I am very nervous about the thought of him doing this. Thanks!

If he has the proper lights, life preservers, knows the waters, has a radio and doesn't go solo, I'd be ok.

Re: Boating at Night
The only problem we ever had a night was. Back in 1997 we ran aground after leaving the BUSH concert at Jones Beach but that was only because the owner of the boat didn't look into the tides properly and was young. But with proper lights, knowing high and low tides and a radio you'll do fine as long as you stay in the bay and you know the weather.

Thanks for your responses! I guess I am hesitant because I grew up on the water. My dad knows everything about boating, and DH doesn't. I would feel more secure if he knew alot about it. And, chances are, he would mostly be going alone.

Re: Boating at Night
We go out on the boat at night all the time- you do need to have a knowledge of the tides and sand bars. As long as you have lights and know what you're doing, you should be fine. I would be a little hesistant if DH were to go out without experience and especially by himself, I don't think I would ever go out at night by myself and I know the bay like the back of my hand.

Then I would talk to my dad & tell him to talk to DH about the "gift" he gave. As a boater, your dad knows it's not smart to go out alone at night.

Yeah...I was actually thinking about talking to my dad about it. Selfishly, a part of me is just relieved that he told me he won't go.

Ditto!! but, I can understand being worried, I would feel the same way....if he is prepared and feels comfortable, I would say it's prob ok..

Re: Boating at Night
DH goes out all the time on his boat fishing at night. Just make sure he knows the tides, has a scanner, CB and working lights. Its also a good idea for him to get a map of the shore hes on and study it to get to know where the rocks are or sand bars depending on if north or south shore.

Re: Boating at Night
maybe you would feel better if he took a boater safety class
I am a memeber of a boat club- so I have to before I can take out one of there boats
if I want to take a boat out a night I have to pass an night class to do so-
