BOCES
Does anyone know any info about working for BOCES (pay, pension, tenure, benefits, etc). I am currently a teacher in the city and just received my Sp Ed certification 5-9. I am thinking about applying to BOCES.
Any info would help.

Re: BOCES
I work at BOCES during the summer. I've been there 5 years. I tried a few times to get a full time job during the year with no luck (I'm certified Spec. Ed 5-12). They are usually looking for substitute teachers and sometimes aides. Teaching positions have been cut the past two years.
Not sure about pay, pension, benefits, etc. however I can say I love workign there over the summer!

Re: BOCES
Which BOCES? I can give you some information about Nassau BOCES. I have taught there for 16 years as a Special Education teacher. My salary is 111,000. We do not have Steps as most districts, but rather four levels with large raises after 2,4,6 and nine years. There is no salary max- You can keep taking classes and advance in salary by adding blocks of 12. This is an awesome benefit- I know multiple teachers making 130,000.
Our union is very strong.
Our healthcare is a bit high....20% contribution.
Tenure is awarded after three years of excellent teaching and portofolio review.
A great place to work!
BOCES has summer programs which are a good way to get your foot in the door. That's how I started

Re: BOCES
Call Central Office in Garden City- 516-396-2500. Tell them you are inquiring about summer employment. Then ask how to be connected with the summer coordinators for middle school. They are the ones who do the hiring, but you will have to find out who the coordinators are. I will check around and see if anyone I know has a name to pass on to you.
The coordinators are already hiriing in my building. (Summer administration is often different than the regular year) I think you have an excellent shot of getting a summer job....almost none of the regular staff work during the summer and our students are 12 month kids...so they need teachers. My advice is to be persistent. Leave messages, get in touch with the coordinators, and follow up.
The pay per day is 185.00 for teachers....not bad for a 9-3 gig.
