Bonnie Fuller: Shut Up Johnny Depp: Being Photographed is NOT Like 'Being Raped!'
How dare you compare yourself to real rape victims in your new Vanity Fair cover story! Women who are raped suffer real terror, physical violence and injuries! You haven't!
Johnny Depp -- you have been a highly paid and catered-to celebrity for WAY too long! You are completely and utterly out of touch with the reality of the lives of real people, especially women. You had the nerve to say in your new Vanity Fair interview that being photographed is like "being raped."
"You just feel like you're being raped somehow," you said. "Raped... it feels like kind of weird .. just weird, man."
Weird, man?
Then you went on to say that you can't stand photo shoots. "Whenever you have a photo shoot or something like that, it's like ... you just feel dumb. It's just so stupid," you told Vanity Fair.
Guess what Johnny? The photo shoots aren't stupid. You're stupid for comparing yourself to a rape victim. Or maybe you're just ignorant and haven't stepped out of your gilded world in years to actually read a newspaper or watch a newscast about the Great Recession that your fellow Americans have been suffering through, or about the horrendous war in the Sudan where actual rapes are an epidemic.
The rape victim advocacy group RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) issued this exclusive statement to Hollywoodlife.com about your comments!
"While photos may feel at times intrusive, being photographed in no way compares to rape -- a violent crime which affects another American every 2 minutes. RAINN welcomes the opportunity to speak with Mr. Depp and educate him about the real life experiences faced by survivors every day, and ways that he can work with RAINN to help."
Rape is an utterly horrific, degrading and demoralizing crime, which is often used as a weapon in wars around the world like Sudan, as I mentioned.
You are one of the highest paid actors in the world. Last year you earned $50 million primarily from your starring role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the huge hit movie franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean.
You live a life of privilege and power. You can buy anything you want. Your children want for nothing. You have the power to decide when you will work or what you will work on, unlike 99.999% of the people on this planet.
You have also NEVER been raped! I am sure that your words will offend any woman who has actually had the truly horrific experience of being raped. I'm sure any of them would change places with you and happily be photographed.Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bonnie-fuller/shut-up-johnny-depp-being_b_995007.html
Additional update: ren’t you so glad that Johnny Depp realizes that comparing himself to a rape victim when he gets photographed, is ridiculous? I sure am. Johnny Depp, you really sent jaws dropping when the November issue of Vanity Fair hit the stands yesterday, Oct. 4, and you made completely offensive remarks about being a rape victim in your cover story interview.
You told the magazine that you so disliked having your picture taken in photo shoots — “you just feel like you’re being raped somehow,” you said.
Not surprisingly, RAINN (Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network) the rape victim advocacy group, almost immediately issued a statement taking offense to your incredibly offensive comments. After all, being a real rape victim is simply incomparable to having your photo taken by a world renowned photographer.
Here’s what RAINN said about you: “While photos may feel at times intrusive, being photographed in no way compares to rape — a violent crime which affects another American every 2 minutes. RAINN welcomes the opportunity to speak with Mr. Depp and educate him about the real life experiences faced by survivors every day, and ways that he can work with RAINN to help.”
Thankfully, you realized that your comments made you sound like an insensitive, out of touch ignoramus and you issued an apology.
Here it is: “I am truly sorry for offending anyone in any way. I never meant to. It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling,” Depp said. “I understand there is no comparison and I am very regretful. In an effort to correct my lack of judgment, please accept my heartfelt apology.”
RAINN has accepted your apology Johnny and I’m willing to accept it too. I just hope you’ve learned to be less self-centered from this experience. — Bonnie Fuller

While I agree it was a poor choice of words, that article took it way over the top! I think it accomplished publicity to their organization so I hope it helps get the word out and offers more services for the population they serve. But truthfully, the premise of the article was way off to me. Not sure what his earnings have to do with anything. They vilified him for truly no reason. I don't get it.
And he meant being photographed by the paparazzi right? If so, I think that celebrities must feel totally violated when they are being photographed eating out with their kids, taking a walk, on the beach on vacation, in their PJs taking out the trash, having a fight, being stalked while driving ... ALL without their approval! That is violating and harrassing. I think this MAY have been what he meant when he used the term "raped".

Yea, his analogy was poor, but this article took it way out of context and blew it out of proportion. I really dont think he meant it was actually like being raped. I think he just meant that paparazzi taking his picture all the time feels like he's being violated, which is completely understandable IMO.

If you have never been raped you should not use that to compare anything to. It is offensive to hear it used to "lightly". Sorry I have no sympothy for the celebrity who has a photoshoot or has a pap follow them and the millions they make being in the public eye while I, or somebody else goes to a therapist to deal with the actual trauma of being raped. People use this word so freely and it's insulting. Choose another word, or get over it. I bet you weren't crying when you made million of your Pirates crapp.

Right we should not use a lot of terms ... using the term "jewed" down is offensive to some jewish people ... saying you are "retarded" is offensive to some people who have mentally challenged loved ones ... using the term "raped" for getting ripped off is offensive to some as well. We all use these expressions and while some people who fit into these groups are offended some also realize that it isn't meant to be hurtful or insensitive. It is said in conversation as an expression w/o thinking. Poor taste ... I will give you that.
He did "get over it" he didn't defend his remarks or be insensitive. He apologized ... he's over it. And he certainly wasn't crying about it ... AGAIN not understanding the references to Pirates of the Carribean.

The ref. to Pirates was he is a celebrity and has been for a looooooooooooong time. I find it in poor taste to use this word unless that has happened to you. He has known for years this is the price of fame. Was he "violated" by the paps...I don't think so. My opinion is it's in poor taste and I have no sympothy for him.

He's an insensitive jerk for saying what he did.
Screw him and his damn apology.
This plus his support for Roman Polanski makes me sick.
He has zero respect for women.

Bad thing to say, I'm sure we've all wished we could eat our words at one time or another, especially if you are member of LIF
