Boo Hoo... No free breast pump for me.

Someone had made a post a while back about their insurance giving full/partial coverage for a breast pump (thank you very much for that useful info!). Chat Icon

I just called my carrier (United Healthcare) and unfortunately, breast pumps are excluded from coverage. Chat Icon Boo Hoo! Oh well. It was worth a shot!

So a reminder to those considering breastfeeding/pumping.... check with your health insurance to see if a breast pump is covered. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yep, me too. UHC/medco. They suck.

They did tell me about UnitedHealthAllies.com. It's a program you sign up for and can get discounts. There are several local companies and one of the on line companies does offer a discount on a pump but it's only 20% and it's a pump I've never heard of. I don't know if the local places will sell pumps. I might call around and see.

Re: Boo Hoo... No free breast pump for me.

I think that with a lot of plans it depends on issues that you might not know until your baby is born. If your baby has a medical reason that he/she can't feed directly from the breast, that might be a reason. If your baby is in the NICU and you need to pump during the night to bring breastmilk, that might be a reason. My baby spent 6 days in the NICU. My plan said something about an extended NICU stay so I didn't really fall into that. I was turned down for coverage for a breastpump rental. I feel that I could haved won on appeal but I didn't want to focus my time on the appeal at that time and I didn't breastfeed long term. I spent $50 for a one month rental.

I promted through to the benefits department. It is generally my practice to not be entirely trusting of phone service so I'm sure I'll call back in a few weeks to inquire again through a supervisor.

Good point about medical needs after birth. Another good thing to remember. Chat Icon

We are not covered either, we have Cigna/Caremark...We do get a 20% off discount though if we order online through a "preferred" dealer..

The other thing is that even if they tell you that it is covered you may still have a problem getting it covered. I spent 3 hours on the phone with my insurance company because they say it's covered( I have Empired BC/BS PPO) but you need a dr's order so its under prescription benefits. Talked to them and they say its durable medical equipment(which sounds more likely) and that it's covered under the regular insurance and not the prescription benefits, so they transfer me back to the other line in which they tell me they're not sure where its covered or where i have to get it from, but it is covered(as long as i get it from certain acceptable Durable medical supply companies) But of course they can't tell me which ones.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
