book about infants

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I'm really nervous about the baby because I have very little experience with infants. I've always been fabulous with children, but I really don't know anything about newborn babies.

Is there a book I could read that might put my mind at rest? Otherwise I'll be bothering all of you ladies every day on the parenting board!

Re: book about infants

I just finished "The Happiest Baby on the Block" and it was very helpful.

It really explained a lot about what to expect in the first few months and how to deal with a baby that cries non stop.

I had no idea why swaddling was a good thing, until I read this

You should also sign up for a baby care class-they generally have them at your hospital or your OBGYN could recommend where to take one. They are not that expensive either and they go over a lot of the stuff first time parents don't know.

The Happiest Baby on the Block which was mentioned above was very helpful to me. Baby 411 is a useful reference as well, along with Caring for your baby and young child. The Dr. Sears book had some helpful sections, but some of the advice is a bit judgemental and doesn't work for all families.

DH and I really liked Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care book. It is an updated version--the old Dr. Spock wrote a lot of it and it is supplemented with modern info, etc.

DH and I took a newborn care class, which we found really useful. It was at our local hospital (not where I am having the baby) but the hospital where I will give birth also offers one.

I bought a book today called Baby 411. So far I have only skimmed it, but it's a good sized book and everything I've read so far seems helpful. I also loved The Modern Girl's Guide to Motherhood by Jane Buckingham.

I also stored a great thread in my notebook- I will find it and bump it for you.
