Booking yourself vs. travel agent
DH and I are planning to go to Mexico (we were supposed to go 2 years ago, but it got cancelled because of a hurricane). Last time we booked it, we used a travel agent .
I have been doing the research on line and found a great deal through travelocity for the trip. It's basically the same amount of money that we were going to pay 2 years ago. Do you think a travel agent could do better? I would hate to have someone do all the work just to say, well, no thanks I got a better deal.
What is everyones experience been?

Re: Booking yourself vs. travel agent
I've done that - found a good deal on line then asked my travel agent if they could match or improve it. If they can, then I use the travel agent. If they can't, I book it myself. That's also because I have someone I use pretty regularly for business (well I used to) so I wanted to give her any business I could, but when it was my $$...she knew I needed the best deal.
PS I can't believe you are going away again!! So jealous!

Re: Booking yourself vs. travel agent
I used Dawn from Cruise One, a vendor on here, and she is great! She has helped me with everything possible and is so helpful and informative, even though I changed my travel plans so many times. FM her for info!

I love Dawn!! She is the only travel agent I have ever liked. I travel a lot and find myself knowing more then the travel agent. Be careful!!! A lot of travel agents really don't look for deals and just book what ever they find. Four years ago I used a local travel agent to book a cruise. She went to book me air fare and it was ridicioulous. I remember the plane left from NYC to Fort Lauderdale. I think it cost about $250 each round trip. I had already booked air fare out of Macarthur to fort Lauderdale for $150 each round trip. A much closer air port and $100 cheaper. So they don't always look for the best deals. I would call Dawn though and see what she can do for you.

Re: Booking yourself vs. travel agent
I dont think travel agents are better!! The ONLY time we used a travel agent was for a Honeymoon. We stayed in 3 different hotels in Hawaii on 3 different islands... the last island... she booked the WRONG hotel. its was a similar name... NOT similar place! So we had to transfer when we got there.
I love expedia! With tripadvisor and the Internet, I feel like after doing a little research.. you can find out way more than any travel agent can tell you.
Good luck!

Re: Booking yourself vs. travel agent
I have a travel agent that I have used in the past who has been wonderful...I would love to give her the commission, I"m just afraid she won't be able to get as good a deal and I'll feel bad...I'm still going to give her a call.

Re: Booking yourself vs. travel agent
I priced it out myself then went to an agent. A few times I was cheaper but there were other times the agent got a better deal. Price them out both ways and go with the cheaper way.
