Books you read in high school
I hate to admit it but I didn't read all the books in high school we were supposed to. I feel like I'm missing out on something. Can anyone remember books from the past that we were supposed to read? I am going to catch up on what I should have done years ago.

Re: Books you read in high school
I teach HS English. Some of the most popular books we teach are:
Novels: Of Mice and Men To Kill a Mockingbird The Catcher in the Rye Night The Great Gatsby The Bluest Eye One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest The Stranger The Metamorphosis (not really a novel, but whatever...) Lord of the Flies 1984
Plays: Fences Death of a Salesman A Streetcar Named Desire A Raisin in the Sun
Plus the Shakespeare standbys: Romeo & Juliet Julius Cesar Hamlet Macbeth A Midsummer Night's Dream Othello (There is a Shakespeare elective that gets into the harder stuff like King Lear etc.)
I am mentally going through all of the book rooms right now, trying to think of every book. I have left out tons.
Happy Reading!

Re: Books you read in high school
Man you are testing my brain, but I'll give it a shot
The Great Gatsby Slaughter House 5 A Lost Lady Madame Bovary The Jungle The Old Man and the Sea A Farewell to Arms A Room of Ones Own Johnny Got His Gun To Kill a Mockingbird The Catcher in the Rye One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest The Metamorphosis The Pearl Waiting for Godot
I also took American Musical Theatre as a half year course and read: Phantom of the Opera West Side Story ...and I can't remember the others
ETA: In 8th grade we read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - this is still one of my favorite books and I read it every few years.

Re: Books you read in high school
Novels: Of Mice and Men To Kill a Mockingbird The Catcher in the Rye (may not be of iunterst to an adult) A Separate Peace (may not be of interest to an adult) The Pearl The Great Gatsby (Highly recommend-I just re-read) The Chocolate War (may not be of interest to an adult) Ethan Frome Animal Farm A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man( AP level) Brave New World The Scarlet Letter The Old Man & the Sea ( that may have been jr high)
We also read a bunch of short stories & plays.

I was just talking to a friend about this and we both want to re-read stuff from HS. I just ordered last night from Amazon, "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Anna Karinina". I bought "used, like new" copies and they were really cheap. I also bought "The Time Travelers Wife", since I've heard that its really good!
ETA: I also made a list of other books I'd like to eventually read. Some are mentioned above and here are some others: Pride and Prejudice Diary of Anne Frank The Count of Monte Cristo Animal Farm Memoirs of a Geisha

The one that sticks out in my head is Go Ask Alice.... I was completely shocked reading that one at 14 years old. Plus I went to a Catholic high school!

Re: Books you read in high school
I read The Giver by Lois Lowry in 8th grade and loved it (I reread it 2 years ago and still do)
I also liked Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton and reread that recently
ETA:
I also remember many of the other books posted:
A Raisin in the Sun Tale of Two Cities The Crucible The Scarlet Letter Death of a Salesman The Great Gatsby To Kill a Mockingbird Lord of the Flies
I read these in AP and was not a fan of either: A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man Invisible Man

Re: Books you read in high school
My favorite book from high school was Exodus by Leon Uris. To this day I don't know why I loved that book so much - something about it just spoke to me.

Re: Books you read in high school
I want to re-read several of these. I did read most of the books we were supposed to read and then I was an English major. I almost became an English teacher. I want to read them again because a.) I miss some of them b.) I can take something different from them now that I have more life experience and c.) there were some books that were law related that I read before I ever knew I wanted to go into law. I want to see what I think now!
Sometimes I envy the friend who went through my major with me and did become an English teacher. These are not just distant memories for her.
