Born this way or something triggered it while developing (vaccines..etc)?

Just thinking back with ds who was dx at 2 with pddnos. Since birth to age 1 I've always noticed and by other people how focused, engaged, alert, smiley ds was. Also played well with toys. When my oldest was getting speech therapy at home the therapist would alway comment on his smile and that he never took his eyes of her when they were teaching my oldest. My little one even at times tried repeating some of the speech therapy. I got him to point, clap hands, wave say how old he was (at the time 1) he would point 1 finger and say 1. Got him to do things way before older ds.

Somewhere around the age of 1 and 1/2 -2 he didn't go beyond what he knew and it was hard to get him to do it on demand it usually took a lot of asking and his eye contact wasn't like it was. So my question is, is being on the spectrum something your born with (genetic) or can you develop it later in life? Can something trigger it like vaccines because my oldest got the same vaccines my little one got. It is interesting and I always question if it's a born that way thing or can come later in life.

What are your thoughts?

I'm not sure if it's genetic or if it "just happens".
My DD has Down Syndrome, my DS has PDD-NOS. DH and I were both tested and are not carriers of anything.

My DS was a late crawler, late walker.
He was on time with smiling, cooing, babbling, etc.

He LOVED toys that spun and any toy that had a ball! He flapped a lot, but, we narrowed it down to "He's just excited".
Of course that mommy instinct kicks in and we watched closer.

He was in EI, we put him in a PT Socialization/Seperation class and it was the transition into Pre-K where they finally diagnosed him.

I noticed the stims and all before the MMR (which I split up), so, I'm not 100% sure it's vaccines. My DD has had all the vaccines (to date) as well and she's doing fine.

Re: Born this way or something triggered it while developing (vaccines..etc)?

DS who's 7 has classic autism. Had all his vax's on time. From birth he was different. Always seemed to be in his own world and very content. Early on I just thought "wow, I'm so lucky to have a good baby" Then by 9 months he had no babble, couldn't sit up let alone stand, everything was delayed. Therapy started then. The only great thing he had was eye contact and was very social. He smiled from ear to ear and was super affectionate (still is, people call him Mr. Sunshine) because of the social part he was never dx. until 3 years old. At 3 it became clear, between all the delays the stim behaviors became insane. It felt like it happened overnight. I truly believe he was born with it.
My other DS is 3, PDD-NOS. He was dx. at 2. He hit every milestone and did all the typical things until 16-18 months his speech was not progressing. He started speech therapy right away and within 2 weeks she came to me and said we need a Pysch. eval. I wanted to dieChat Icon it was so heartbreaking. I thought he was fine. Probably because he was SO different than my other son but yet still had quirks I chose not to see. I delayed his shots. He didn't have the MMR until 3. I feel he to was born with it.
I am a believer that yes it's genetic but I think that this gene is triggered by something. Something that is common but what? I say common because in other countries Autism is on the rise so it's something we are all eating, smelling, living with.....we just need to find out already what it is and end this for the future. That's my personal theory.

I dont know what it is. The studies show that it runs in families (DH's nephew is autistic) which points to genetic.

DS was always delayed but he was also 3 1/2 weeks early so they always adjusted his age and said that was the reason for his delays. However, my mom gut always knew something was "off." At 13 months DS had a couple of words and lost them. At 12 months he would press the button on his toy, find the Itsy Bitsy Spider song and do the finger play along with it. By 13 months that skill was gone. At his 1st birthday party a relative asked if I had gotten his hearing checked because he showed no acknowledgment when his name was called. For all these things, the pediatrician had an explanation or a "we'll keep our eye on it. It's too early..."

I read that a theory is some children are born "at risk" for autism and something triggers it. I wish I had the answerChat Icon

Autism is an epidemic...there is NO SUCH thing as a genetic epidemic!!!!

My son was NOT born with it. I noticed regression and loss of things after the DTap vaccince. How does someone lose something they already had. This is my opinion, and many opinions of MANY moms who believe it.
I also think we need to look at all the foods we eat now. GMO's are BIG. Most of the food that is genetically modified is soy, corn, wheat, rice.
Why all of the sudden increase in food allergies and celiacs?? Makes you wonder. All the FDA cares about is making $$$ not that our children are being poisoned with toxins in our food!!!!Sorry...I will get off myChat Icon

But then why does it only affect some and not all? Do you think that kids on the spectrum have something different in their bellys than a kid who isn't affected? I guess it could be possible but then why aren't scientists not focused on food, toxins-etc.,?
I'm just asking in general not questioning you at all. I really have no clue to why. My kids though especially Matt was born with it. Sometimes I question maybe he has more than just autism. He just has so many deficits and learning itself is so darn hard for him that I feel like I'm missing somethingChat Icon

There's no question with DD..she was born this way. DH could tell within days of her birth that there was something different about her.

Re: Born this way or something triggered it while developing (vaccines..etc)?

I don't know, I think there is a genetic component but maybe something triggers it.
DS#1 only had 4 shots (hep b @3 days old) and the hib ( 9 months, 1 year)
The first odd thing I noticed was around 3 months old he would do what I call the "restless leg" when he was falling asleep. He would pick up his legs up and down on the mattress, He started "rocking" from side to side as soon as he was able to sit up around 7 months old.
DS #2 has not had ANY vacc. and (knock on wood) is developing normally so far. (knock on wood again). They were both genetically tested and they are "carriers" of something called fragile X. I am a carrier as well. We don't have the disease but we can pass our faulty gene on and it could be a problem for my grandchildren. So maybe it could be something related to the X gene. Hence why so many boys are on the spectrum they only have 1 x and if its faulty they're screwed as opposed to girls who have 2 X's, if 1 is faulty the other can compesate. KWIM? This is my theory....lol

Studies (ones that I'm not going to quote right this minute) show that most cases of ASD occur in children between the first and second year of life...whether or not something is triggering it or if this was inevitable remains to be seen....We all have our theories.

But I don't think that the poisoning theory is so off the mark...Children on the spectrum maybe manifesting their reactions neurologically while other kids are manifesting their reactions through skin, poor respiratory systems, poor digestive systems, and poor immunity in general....Kids are just sicker in general and you have to wonder why?

Immunology and the effect it has on all our "systems" is astounding. The field of immunology is somewhat new, and more and more discoveries are happening all the time. Antibodies, and antigens are responsible for so many issues. Do most conventional doctors have a deep understanding of the immune system ? "NO". It's my hope that neurologists also study immunology so there could be greater connections being made. Most conventional doctors do not have much background knowlege in nutrition and how strongly that connects to the immune system.

That second year of life....so many things change for so many children, why ???? Perhaps the digestive system isn't working adequately to absorb the nutrients that's needed for typical development or a healthy body ? These nutrients work directly with the neurological system. Isn't the second year when children are no longer on formula or breast milk ? Maybe the intestines are being burdened by food that isn't being digested, this food, can be a breeding ground for bacteria and can allow toxins to circulate throughout the system.

Antibodies, can develop and attack the mitochondria etc. The inability for amino acids to work properly, pheno-sulfertransferase problems, G-alpha protein defects that affect sensory preception and language . Bottom line
recent evidence indicates that autism is a disorder of the nervous system and the immune system, affecting multiple metabolic pathways

It is my opinion that ASD is caused by an autoimmune reaction, just like asthma, eczema, food intolerance and every other issue these poor kids have to deal with these days.

I like this theory very much! It makes a lot of sense! If our bodies are not able to get the nutrients it needs, the cascading effect can be so great!
