borrowed vs. new

I have a few people who are willing to lend me baby items. I am wondering what items you are willing to borrow and which you feel you have to buy new.

I am probably borrowing a crib (less than a few years old) but I am thinking about things like the highchair, bouncy chair, that type of stuff.

TIA!

Re: borrowed vs. new

When I was PG, I only wanted new things, but looking back on how fast they go though items, getting something borrowed would have been the way to go on most things.
You can always wash it.
The only things I would want new are the car seats/infant seats.

Re: borrowed vs. new

I took whatever was offered to me. I have borrowed a bassinet, an extra swing, an extra car seat base (same kind, wrong color, but I don't care) and will take anything anyone else offers. As long as its clean I don't mind borrowing stuff.

I think it all depends on the condition of the items.

I would have reservations about cribs and carseats though. These are 2 items that you need to be sure are properly assembled, installed, used and up to date. You just never know what kind of treatment they received...their kid could've jumped like a maniac and weakened a crib's support. Their carseat might look fine, but have been in an accident and you not know about it and not be "safe" anymore.

I agree and wouldn't borrow a car seat or crib either

Re: borrowed vs. new

With my first, i wanted everything new. I dont even really know why. With this one, hand me downs are great if people give them to me. A few things i like new are infant carseat/stroller, bath, bottles..thats pretty much it. If people offered me other stuff, i would take it gladly.

Re: borrowed vs. new

I do plan on buying new car seat(s). The crib was barely used, since my friend's little one wouldn't sleep in it Chat Icon

Re: borrowed vs. new

I would pretty much borrow anything as long as

1-they met all the safety standards and are up todate
2-they are gently used
3-it will save $$

Bolts can be tightened and upholstery can be washed.

Re: borrowed vs. new

Actually Trish on these boards gave me a bassinett. It is in perfect condition. I figured it was something used for such a short time, why not.

If it is in good condition, clean and safe I say why not save some money.

Re: borrowed vs. new

Honestly I have no problem using borrowed. Especially in the newborn stage when the baby grows out of stuff so quickly, and the things like bouncy seats are usable for such a short time.
