Boy or Girl? What determines the likelihood...
I read an interesting article that I thought of sharing:
"The research, published online today by the journal Evolutionary Biology, involved a study of 927 family trees containing information on 556,387 people from North America and Europe going back to 1600.
"The family tree study showed that whether you're likely to have a boy or a girl is inherited. We now know that men are more likely to have sons if they have more brothers but are more likely to have daughters if they have more sisters. However, in women, you just can't predict it," Mr Gellatly explains.

Just curious how true this is. It seems true in my case - DH has 1 brother and 1 sister, and his dad has 9 brothers out of 13 kids!

Not true at all for my father or DH. My father was 1 of 6, 4 boys and 2 girls. He had 2 girls, no boys. DH only has a brother. We have a DD.

Seems to be true in our case - DH only has a sister and we have a daughter and another daughter on the way!

My mom has 5 sister and 6 brothers. She had 4 girls and 1 boy...
All of my Uncles had girls first and all of my aunts had boys first (except my mother)... One of my uncles has 4 girls... everyone else is a mix of girls/boys except my family is 4 girls and 1 boy.

That's funny b/c now that I think about my uncles, 1 had 1 boy (only kid) and 1 had 2 girls (no boys). Seems pretty random to me!

Re: Boy or Girl? What determines the likelihood...
I can't say if it's the case for us because DH is an only child.
As for family:
My dad has one sister and one brother, he had 3 boys and one girl. Dad's brother has 2 girls.
My step-dad has one sister and he had a boy.
FIL has one sister and he had a boy.
To be honest, I think it's all pretty random.

Boy or Girl? What determines the likelihood...
DH is the only boy of 3 kids. One sister had 1 boy and one sister had 1 girl.
I'm the oldest of 2 girls and I'm having my 2nd girl. My mom is also the oldest of 2 girls and has 2 girls. My dad is the youngest of 3 boys. The oldest boy had a boy and a girl.

I'm only going to provide one example that blows this theory to bits...
My dad is the youngest of:
Between him and his four brothers, they had:
So, yeah...

Re: Boy or Girl? What determines the likelihood...
Hm. Thinking back to my parents...
my dad grew up with 3 brothers and 2 sisters. So a family of 4 boys, 2 girls
my mom grew up with 3 brothers. So a family of 3 boys, 1 girl
They had all 3 daughters
So didn't seem to work in their case. But interesting theory because in my family, pretty much all of my cousins are girls. We thought maybe the next generation would be all boys when my oldest cousin had her 2 sons, but then DD was born and then 2 more girls from another cousin. So who knows what's going on. lol.

Boy or Girl? What determines the likelihood...
I know 3 families that are solely boys- all are families of 3 men who all had boys so I'm not surprised.
DH has a brother and a sister so it's a crap shoot for us!

Re: Boy or Girl? What determines the likelihood...
I find this so interesting & I wonder about the scientific mechanism behind it. What exactly is inherited? Stronger/faster Y sperm or what? Anyway this is why I think I will have all boys. DH is one of three boys. Although, interestingly, both my mom & grandma had two boys first followed by a girl or in my grandmother's case 2 girls.... so maybe someday I can continue that pattern. Though I wouldn't mind more boys either!

Boy or Girl? What determines the likelihood...
Dh is one of five- there are three boys and two girls--we have a daughter and his older brother has a son (1st. Born) and a daughter. Guess we will have to wait and see what happens if my other brother in law has children.
