Boycott Macys!! (Please Read!)
my 75 year old jewelry loving grandma was shopping at the Herald Square macys a few months ago with my aunt. She saw an $800 piece of jewelery that she liked, wasnt sure if she wanted, so she placed it on hold.
The next week, she decided she didnt want it and called to cancel.
WELL - Macy's charged her credit card (we think an employee took the jewelery, forged her signature). My grandmother called to dispute the charges....months later, she's getting a call from a collection agent (who works for macys ) who is telling her that if she doesnt pay the balance, SHE WILL NOT GET CREDIT FOR 7 YEARS
not only is that UNTRUE - Macys is saying that they reviewed the dispute (despite the fact that we asked to see the "signed" sales slip, which they said they had ) and the woman today who said "well I send you stuff in the mail and dont get a response" - we NEVER got anything from her - but we get the bills!!! and she is threatening a 75 year old lady!
DONT USE A MACYS CHARGE! - the macys charge is owned by Federated - which also owns Macys. total conflict of interest, imo.
any advice how to proceed? I told my grandmother to call a lawyer and NOT send the check. She'll never get it back.

i would call a lawyer, but they have to prove that the charge was hers.
First send a certified/return receipt letter stating that you need proof that it was purchased, meaning sales slip showing a signature. No written auth, no money.

thats what I thought, they need to show us that she purchased it (which we know she didnt!)
She sent a letter return receipt already, we got NOTHING in return.

She doesn't need a lawyer-Send a certified mail return recipt request to the collection agent and Macys stating that this was never purchased only put on hold. You should ask for original signed reciepts(that your Grandma signed)
Check out Creditboards.com and this may help you:

Ugh that really sux!
I would advise you contact a lawyer ASAP. My BIL had his identity stolen and the people who stole it took out a Macy's charge. It took years for him to make them understand that the card and charges were fraudlant. It was total nightmare and the people at Macy's were horrible to deal with.

I have been boycoting Macy's for other reasons, so I have no problem adding your poor grandma to my list of complaints against them.
I would do what others have said, keep sending the same letter, every week if you have to, requesting the signed receipt and video surveillance of your grandmother entering, purchasing and leaving the store with the jewelry. The receipt should have a date and time and a register of purchase, so tracking the tape should be pretty easy for them.
If they cannot produce the evidence you are asking for, threaten a lawsuit for fraud. Also send a copy of these letters to whomever you are dealing with at the credit bureau.

Re: Boycott Macys!! (Please Read!)
that is outrageous!!!!!! I wish I had advice for you. I hope she gets this matter resolved ASAP!
I shop at Macy's but only use my Macy's charge when it gets me an additional 15% off during a sale, and not for big ticket items.
I had a bad experience at their furniture store in Carle Place once. I was looking at mattresses and this sleaze ball sales guy (redundant, I know!) tell me "I can give you a better deal, but I need to see your Macy's card". fine, I took it out and showed it to him. he goes to grab it from me and I quickly withdrew my hand he said "I'm sorry, but I have to take it to my manager in the back to get you a price". that's when I said "buh BYE!"
