Boys in the ladies Bathroom and vice versa
At what age is it no longer OK to bring your son into the ladies room or your DD into the mens room? I have 2 DD's that have never been in a men's room. Today at the mall, my girls and I went into the ladies room and a women came in with her son. I would say he was around 10. DD is 9 and was SUUUper uncomfy with him in there. She did not want to go in until he left. I can see both sides of this, in a way, and wonder what you ladies think is the "right" thing??????

My son is only 3, but I can't imagine sending him into a men's room by himself, so he'll be joining me the ladies room for a really long time.

This is tough. I wonder about my DH taking DD into men's rooms when she is 6 or so. Not liking that idea...Its really the age you feel comfortable letting them go into the mens/womens room alone...I dont know...I can see why that woman wouldnt let her son, at 10 go into the mens room alone.. but.. your daughter must have been so uncomfortable...at her age I can see 10 being way too old!!!!!! hmmm

That is kinda how I feel. I also wonder if it is a double standard OK for boys and not for girls.

When I take Damien into the ladies room I always look first to try and make sure it is empty. He gets embarrassed too, but I don't want him alone in a men's room.

My son is 8 & I'm still taking him in if it's a communal bathroom.
While 10 seems old, it's not old when your son is 10 & wants to go to the men's room without you.
Also I'm not really seeing both sides of it as long as women's rooms have stalls.
I just mean that I can understand not wanting to send your 10 year old in alone, but I felt bad for DD being so uncomfy. He was looking in the cracks of the stalls to see if one was empty and she was giving me the BIG OMG EYES!

Re: Boys in the ladies Bathroom and vice versa
That's an interesting question. I would think that by 9 - 10 years old - I would allow my child to go into the bathroom on their own....
With me waiting for them outside of course!
I honestly don't remember my parents going into the bathroom with me every single time we were out in public at 10 years old. I don't know. I also have 2 daughters so for the most part they will be with me in the bathroom for a whole lot of years to come but I would think at 10 years old they could go on their own...... I guess I won't know till I get there?!

Re: Boys in the ladies Bathroom and vice versa
i'm not there yet, but if the option were for me to take my 10yo son into the ladies room with me or leave him ALONE outside the bathroom, he will definitely be coming with me if it's a place i don't feel safe leaving him alone in.
ladies' rooms have stalls as a PP said--there's really nothing to see. men's rooms are trickier

Re: Boys in the ladies Bathroom and vice versa
I think it depends on where it is.
Robbie is 9 and really resists going into the ladies bathroom with me - so in a lot of places I will walk him to the men's room, let him go in and wait outside for him. But in a mall.. I don't think I could do it. There are just too many people in a mall for me to be comfortable letting my little boy go into the bathroom alone. Same with sports stadiums or any really large, crowded public place.
And if I have to pee they are coming in with me. I have taught them to stand by the sinks and wait without being obnoxious though.

I agree about the whole mall thing. It is a scary place. Jordan(9) goes in alone, with DH or I standing outside in some places but the mall is a tough one. DH would not taken Jordan to a Yankee game without me for years because of the bathroom situation. Now the new stadium has a private family bathroom, where he can stand outside while she is the only one in the bathroom
