Re: Brazilian straightener is this ok to do
ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!
frankly, I am still stunned that this hair process is legal at all. The hair is straightened with formaldehyde
I am a medical researcher, and use formaldehyde to fix tissues. It basically cross-links all proteins, turning something that would otherwise decay, into something that will last forever. I have to use it in a fume hood so I don't inhale the fumes, and wear gloves to make sure it doesn't touch my skin. I'm stunned that it's legal to pour it on top of someones head!
Besides causing cancer, it is teratogenic (causes birth defects).
Please don't do it! Also, don't go into a salon that does it (becuase of the fumes).
formaldehyde msds
(also, don't believe that the keratin in the treatment is doing anything to your hair. Keratin is what fingernails are made of. Pouring a solution of keratin on your hair will do just as much as pouring nail filings on your hair...) It will merely wash off.

I gather it must be formaldehyde free if they say it is.... but they likely either replace it with another 'aldehyde' such as glutaraldehyde (just as bad), or the stuff simply doesn't work! I would check the ingredient list and look for 'aldehyde' or some other word like 'formalin' (which contains roughly 70% formaldehyde). IF it smells strong and chemically, it likely is bad.
these chemicals fix proteins... our hair is made of protein.... the fomaldehyde freezes the hair into a straight form (hair is generally straigher when wet) when it's applied.

Re: Brazilian straightener is this ok to do
Not sure what the Japanese straightening process is, but is that safer? I thought the JHS used formaldehyde but the Brazilian didn't. My salon says that they don't do Brazilian but do a "Keratin" treatment. Do you think it is the same thing and they are just trying to cover up the fact that they are using the formaldehyde?

The keratin is the Brazilian which in most cases will use formaldehyde.

Re: Brazilian straightener is this ok to do
I did the Brazilian Hair Straightner. The salon claimed it was free of formaldahyde however I didn't think to ask what it was substitued with.
I told them I was BFing and although they are no doctors or scientists they told me it was safe so I went for it.
Personally, it was a waste of money and I wouldn't recommend it.

Re: Brazilian straightener is this ok to do
ive had both done and for me it made everything sooo much easier. my hair is thick and wavy. with the japanese i would just "wash and go" and my hair would be pin straight, but it definitely damaged my hair. i currently have the brazilian and i have to blow it out a little to get it smooth, but it only takes me less than 10 minutes...and my hair looks much healthier.
i wouldnt do either treatment if i was BFing though...the chemicals are definitely strong!
