Breaking down walls

I am thinking of breaking down the wall between my livingroom and den to put in french doors, is this hard to do?

Also, thinking about putting in sliding doors from the living room to the backyard... since the weather is getting cold, I wanted to know how long it approx. takes, if it will be a complicated multiple day job, I'll probably do it next summer.

Any idea how much these would cost me?

TIA

Re: Breaking down walls

Are you planning on doing the work yourself? If so you can buy the doors at lowes, home depot etc....and then probably install them with in two days. One day to cut the wall out, and cap the siding if there is siding, cut and cap the base board heating if there is baseboards....and the second day to install the doors, and sheet rock the walls around it, and paint and stuff.....

I saw it on an episode of HGTV's weekend warriors.

If you are going to hire someone to do it, I have seen ads in the penny saver or shoppers guide where they charge $900 to $1500 too install the doors. I am not sure of the quality of the doors they give you though. There are many types of doors to get. There is wood which are expensive. My sister has wood sliders and they cost her $900 a pop, and she has one coming off her dining room, and one coming off her family room.

You can get french doors or sliding doors in aluminum, vinyl, steel, and wood. I have seen sliding doors starting at $250, and I have seen french doors starting at $450.

Danielle and I are planning to blow out the wall in our dining room and put in either french or sliding doors. The problem with french, is they open in and take up space inside of the house...I am leaning towards sliding doors.

I personally have not done it yet, but I have been reading and watching alot of stuff on doing things like that. I see projects like that on HGTV and they always state like Scott says about 2- 3 days as well.

I think it is all a matter of getting comfortable in doing that kind of stuff and even just trying to do it.

We broke down some walls, not ourselves though...we are so not handy! But if I remember correctly it took a day to demo the walls and then another day to patch up the connecting walls.

Good Luck!
