BREAKING NEWS-- WOW, So It's Real? Bloomberg Announces BIG CUTS AGAIN:)
I wonder what it means for all of the city teachers??? How many years of teaching will be on the chopping block if you have a Comman Branch/Early Childhood License? Hummm..anyone hear anything?
FROM 1010 WINS: The news from City Hall is bleak, but it could get even bleaker, because the cuts Bloomberg announced cover only part of the budget gap. More than $1 billion in cuts were announced Thursday.
The job cuts are spread throughout the agencies. More than 6,000 teaching positions are being eliminated. Also being cut are 350 police department civilian posts and 200 sanitation supervisor jobs.
Without an economic recovery, there’s nothing the mayor can do but cut.
“Anybody that thinks we have enough money to continue doing the things we’ve been doing the ways we’ve been doing them is mistaken,” the mayor warned Wednesday.
As the first down payment for filling the City budget gap, officials plan to eliminate thousands of jobs through layoffs and attrition until July 1.
“We have to find ways to do more with less, and doing more with less incidently always means fewer people because 80-percent of our budget is spent on salaries and benefits,” Bloomberg said.
Among the cuts, 20 fire companies will be closed overnight, over 640 street resurfacing employees will be furloughed for a week, meaning 9,000 potholes won’t be filled, almost 1,500 Parks Department employees will be furloughed for three months in the winter, and 200 sanitation supervisors will be eliminated.
Also on the chopping block, 59 3-1-1 call takers will lose their jobs, library funding will be cut by $20 million, forcing libraries to close an additional day a week, security at family homeless shelters will be reduced, and 2,100 summer youth jobs will be eliminated.

"The sky is falling! The sky is falling"
He doesn't mention that NYS is getting race to the top money. I bet that isn't factored in yet.

really? I went to my SD's board meeting this week and they gave us the doom and gloom and then at the end said that Race to the Top would save x amount of jobs.

Yep! Race to the Top is ONLY for evaluation and data systems. Arne Duncan himself said that increasing class sizes is not really a big deal, and that "talented new teachers" (in NYC, lots of Teach for America) shouldn't be laid off. No one should be laid off! But I expect we'll see another go at ending last in/first out.
BUT I also find the timing and specifics of the # curious- like it's a subtle threat to us if Cathie Black does not get her waiver. Then he can say, "Well, I wanted a businesswoman who could have helped us avert layoffs, but too many teachers and parents opposed her." That's how Bloomberg rolls.
Or maybe I've become too much of a conspiracy theorist.

I agree with you. I think this coinsides with Cathie Black and his agenda.
I spent a good part of last year living in fear of being laid off and will not do that again. ugh I am so sick of him and his threats.

ugh the whole TFA thing really makes me !!! Most of the people that do TFA are not trained, certified teachers so how can you call them "talented new teachers?"
Bloomberg always makes his threats around this time of year and it never ends up being as bad as he says it's going to be. I have no doubt in my mind that there will be cuts, but chances are it won't be as many as he's saying!
