Breaking Up Concrete?
The people we bought the house from had the bright idea to put a sidewalk through the yard.
We want to break that up and plant grass... how the heck do you break up about 3" think concrete?

i have no idea how you would go about breaking up concrete but I was told that you have to get a permit for the work b/c it's considered construction???

Re: Breaking Up Concrete?
Really? WOW dh is not going to like that we have a concrete walkway that runs along side of the house from the driveway to the door. My dh wants to break that up and put in a stamped concrete walkway through the front lawn. Oh boy.

Re: Breaking Up Concrete?
We just had our concrete driveway and walkways broken up and no one said a word about a permit.
BTW, they used sledgehammers.

I just broke up my front walkway. I used a sledgehammer and crowbar thing and a whole lot of effort.

Re: Breaking Up Concrete?
You can use a sledgehammer. As for a permit, I believe that so long as you are replacing an already existing front porch, driveway or walkway, then you don't need a permit.

Re: Breaking Up Concrete?
Thanks everyone. Wow! That sounds like really hard work... but I guess if thats the best way, then it must be done.
I really dont see why to remove something and fill it in with grass you would need a permit but I am just going to go ahead and do it anyway.

Re: Breaking Up Concrete?
Is it a sidewalk from the town - -? Then, it would most likely require a permit. If it's just a personal walkway - can't imagine it requiring a permit.
If you have anyone who can operate one - you can rent a jackhammer and make the job go 100x faster.

No its in our own yard not the actual sidewalk. Hmmm I wonder how hard it would be to use a jack hammer. Good idea!

Re: Breaking Up Concrete?
Hate to even ask but how the heck are you going to get rid of it once u break it up??
The other thing is when a contractor does it they life the whole thing up in one slab. I think they make cuts with a circular saw to make the sections smaller and then lift it up in large sections with a machine.

Re: Breaking Up Concrete?
id take a sledge hammer to it. I dont think you need a permit because it is small, and you arent building.
also the cement- towns have restrictions on the size of it, and some wont take it, you can manually remove it to the dump or get a garbage removal company to pick it up
Good luck

Re: Breaking Up Concrete?
if you get a dumpster to get rid of the concrete - you have to let them know that in advance. Thr pricing is dependent on the type of garbage you're disposing of.
Also - don't think you'd save all that much money by taking it to the dump yourself......they charge by weight.
I'd check your local pick-up to see what they'll tolerate.

as long as your replacing it shouldn't be a big deal unless you have nosy neighbors. it might be dependent on the town but the contractor i asked told me that the concrete path and 6 x 4 feet porch would require a permit to destroy and then replace by the town which would also require a permit. i think it's dependent on those nosy neighbors.

Re: Breaking Up Concrete?
Thanks again everyone! Actually those people who lived here were totally stone happy. There were bricks and slabs of stone ALL OVER the place so we had to make at least 5 trips to the recycling plant and throw them in the dumpster there. The garbage men dont take stone but since it is recycleable, you can take it to the dump.
