breast milk freezer stash ???
My DD is 3 weeks old and I already have 18 2.5 ounce tubes of frozen BM and 21 bags between 3-5 ounces of BM. I have given DD a couple of bottles but I usually give her freshly pumped NOT frozen. I am assuming that the fresh milk is better than the frozen milk. I am probably not going back to work for another 5 months or so. When I am going to give her all this frozen milk??? Should i just get a deep freezer?...i would hate to waste all this milk...i think it only lasts up to three months in a regular freezer....right?

Re: breast milk freezer stash ???
Start using some of the oldest frozen stash once or twice a day in about another 5 weeks. So in March, I would start rotating the December milk in the day. So if DC takes 6 bottles, one or two would be frozen from December. Than January frozen milk would be used in April.

I agree start using the oldest stash and GO YOU for being able to pump that much I have been exclusively BF and i fins it so hard to find time to pump. Any suggestions on when to do it. I have about 10 bahs of 4 ounces (my DS is taking 5 oz.) and I go to back to work in weeks.

Re: breast milk freezer stash ???
Honestly, IMO the 4 months in the freezer is just a guideline....it can stay longer than that. Is it in your regular freezer? I keep mine in the freezer we have in the basement, which is not even opened on a daily basis. Keep making a stash, it's a great thing to have!! You never know when you may need it!! I remember someone posting on here that they had to take an antibiotic that they couldn't nurse their baby while taking, so they bottle fed them the frozen stuff and pumped and dumped while they were taking the antibiotic.

ITA. I try not to go past 3 months, but I've given milk as old as 5 months to DS and haven't had a problem. You can always rotate old milk as PP mentions. I'm so glad I have a second refrigerator/freezer downstairs b/c that's where I stored the milk.

::Raising hand:: That was me! I was actually just going to post the same thing, that it's a good thing to have a frozen stash!
If you can use the frozen stuff before 3 months, that will be best. We have a deep freezer, and my LC told us it'll be good for up to a year So if you can afford it, it's a good investment.

Thank you ladies!!!
DNJ: To be quite honest....I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to pumping. I have no idea if its right or wrong...but my boobs produce a lot of milk...and since my DD only eats from one breast at a time...every 2-4 hours...I HAVE to pump the other one or else its gets so uncomfortably engorged and she hates eating from the engorged breast. So I either pump the breast she doesn't eat from after I nurse her...or I pump the breast right before I feed her. I only pump for 3-4 minutes...not to empty the breast but to just release some of the milk. We shall see how long it lasts!

Re: breast milk freezer stash ???
Dani I am so jealous of your production. I tried all three times and had such low supply I stopped. I guess mine are defective!

Be careful with this. I either recommend taking your DC of breast #1 and putting them on #2 so they drink from both sides at each feeding, or stop pumping the other side - or else you will have to do this to be comfortable. It's better to let your body figure out how much milk you actually need.

Re: breast milk freezer stash ???
holy crap dani you are a milk machine that is insane!!!! I am jealous. Maybe you should just start to give her a bottle a day so she can be used to the bottle and use up the frozen stuff. wow wanting to use up the frozen stash that is unheard of!!
I think I told you, I also think you may want to stop pumping the other side so your body adjusts even if its uncomfortable for a day or two.

I don't pump everytime I nurse my dd...because I definitely want to regulate my milk production...I usually do this once or twice a day...when the one breast is so engorged my DD won't nurse from it. I am hoping to cut this altogether eventually. But if I don't pump....she won't nurse...so I don't have another choice. Unless there is something else I can do.
