Breast Pump Rental
As I was in BRU Saturday pondering over all the majorly expensive breast pumps they have..... a woman walking by suggested that I contact my hospital (St. Catherines) about renting a hospital-grade breast pump for only like $50 a month, which might be covered by insurance.
Anyone have experience with this? It sounds like an awesome idea for me because I am not 100% into breast-feeding, but my DH really wants me to try. This way, if it doesn't work out, I am not out the $300+. Any info you gals have would be helpful - TIA!

Re: Breast Pump Rental
i am currently renting from my hospital in NJ...
for me it's $20/week or $75/month.
call your hospital. if they don't rent them directly, they should be able to refer you to places that do.

Re: Breast Pump Rental
The pumps are all for different reasons. A rental hospital grade pump is not easily portable and is used for medical reasons such as a preemie, low milk supply or latching issues. A pump that you purchase such as a Medela PIS is for working moms or moms who have an established milk supply who need to pump to go out for the night or away for a weekend etc... A high quality pump is worth every single penny...there is a HUGE difference between the low cost ones. But it all depends on your needs and reasons for pumping.
Some insurance companies will cover your hospital grade pump rental IF your baby is born preemie or with certain conditions that require you to pump. Mine would not cover my rental or LC even though I had a low supply issue. They told me to use formula...jerks.

Re: Breast Pump Rental
Renting a hospital pump is a good idea in the beginning to see if pumping and breastfeeding will work for you. You can usually rent from a lactation consultant. You will still need to buy your own kit (includes tubing and other parts).
I did this for 2 months and now have a medela PIS.
The rental is $65 a month and my insurance didn't cover it either.

I'd feel a little skeptical in using a rental pump. I just read a pregnancy magazine where they said you should never borrow a friend's breast pump because there might be bacteria in it from the other's baby mom that can harm your baby. I'm certain that the hospitals will probably sterilize them but now that I read I wouldn't feel comfortable doing this. I'm still not sure if I'm going to breastfeed....I keep going back and forth with this......
You only rent the air compressor, not the actualy pumping equipment. You're not putting anything on your body that has touched someone else's body. Everything is sterile and brand new (besides the compressor).
I rent a hospital grade pump from a medical supply store in Coram. It's a Medela Lactina. I love it. My daughter would not latch, so I exclusively pump, and it works for our situation. It costs me $45 a month and I think it's well worth the cost, especially if you aren't sure if you are going to be breastfeeding. However, if you DO breastfeed, you don't necessarily need a hospital grade pump because you probably won't be pumping for 4-6 weeks. I'd just get a hand pump for the beginning to see what happens.

Re: Breast Pump Rental
NEVER allow anyone to rent you a Pump In Style! Those are NOT rental pumps. You can transfer disease to your baby since they are not able to sterlize the pump. A true hospital grade pump such as a Medela Classic or Lactina is different and can be sterlized. You purchase your own tubing and breast shield. The hospital gives you the tubing and shields so keep them to use at home. You can definately use a hospital pump..they keep them sterlized and safe for your use.
Of course, if your best friend or sister has a PIS and you know they are disease free you can borrow their's. That is not the same as renting one or buying a used pump on eBay.
I would not get a hand pump. If you have a medical reason for needing a pump that early a hand pump will not help at all.
