Breastfeeding and losing weight
I am scheduled for a c-section this Friyday. I am going to breastfeed and have heard that by doing so, the pregnancy weight usally comes off very easy. (I haven't gained much, so I'm not really that concerned, but I do have pre-pregnancy weight that I DO want to lose also). Anyway, this past week I have heard a couple of times that by breastfeeding, weight is usually held onto by the body. I have a friend who is very thin, but still has almost 10lbs that doesn't seem to be coming off due to breastfeeding. Is this true? If I eat healthy and exercise a bit, wouldn't it come off regardless of b/f'g? What is your experience?

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
First good luck Friday! I b/f my kids and found that the wieght came off pretty quick. You do have to eat right and when able work out. If you do all 3 you shld have no prob. B/F uses about 500 calories a day.

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
Good luck! I held onto about 10 pds until I stopped BF. It doesn't help that you are ravenous all the time!
Don't worry- the weight comes off- I kept saying nine months on, nine months off and that was really true for me.

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
I lost about 8-10 lbs when I stopped BFing as well...and I was hungry A LOT! But you need and burn more calories when you are BFing...
GOOD LUCK FRIDAY

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
Everyone is different, but for me, breastfeeding was awesome for weight loss. My pre-preggo weight was 113. I gained about 30 pounds, lost it all by my 6-week pp visit, plus 5 more pounds -- so I spent about a year at 107 lbs while breastfeeding. My son is now older and breastfeeding a lot less, so my weight is back up to 111 lbs.Hope it works that well for you, too!

I formula feed and the weight came off pretty fast. I think walking helped a lot!
Good luck

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
BFing helps your uterus to contract back to shape faster and helps you burn calories but not necessarily lose more weight.
According to my doctor, my body will hold on to about 8lbs or so while bfing but when I stop, I should drop that 8lbs without trying. At 7 1/2 weeks post pardum, I have 18 lbs to go to get to my pre-preggo weight. I gained 50 overall so it will be a while before I'm back to my normal shape.

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
I gained 45 lbs. and lost 25 the first week. I have about 5 more lbs. to go at 4 months pp. I read somewhere that your body keeps a little extra in storage just in case. Good luck Friday!

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
I bave found that BF has not helped me to lose weight at all and at this point am convinced I am staying chubby b/c of it. I eat really healthy and exercise and am not bouncing back. I really think everyone's body is different and there is no way to tell how yours will be.

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
i gained 25 pounds and lost 18 within the first 2 weeks... and then gained back 5 from BFing. BFing has made me ravenous and i've held on to those pounds no matter what i do!

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
I was overweight pre-preg. I lost all 25 pounds from the pregnancy in 2 weeks. However, I didn't lose anything after that. The scale stopped at the exact number that I was before I got pregnant. I have lost about another 8 pounds since I stopped bf'ing. (I did it for 6 months)

This is how I feel. I lost my baby weight initially but I feel like once my BFing kicked in (we had trouble in the beginning) I started to gain weight and nothing helped.
I think my body is holding onto some weight since I am still nursing and I want to wean and see what happens.

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
I am 6 months pp I am in the last days of weaning my daughter . I was 102 before I got prego I gained 35lbs, I lost 25lbs within 3 weeks of having the baby, but yes I still have about 6-8 lbs to go(don't want to go back to my pp weight) I don't know if it's b/c of the bfing , this is the first time I hear about not being able to lose last few pounds, maybe it's true, b/c no mater what I do the last few lbs won't come off. so I guess I 'll see what happens once I am done bfing.

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
I gained 62 pounds...I KNOW BFing help me lose a lot of that. In the first month, 40 came off.
weird, I am still holding onto 8 lbs...but I think I broke through that in the last 2 weeks since I have been nursing a lot less.

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
I gained 48lbs and seem to have lost about 5 more than I gained and the baby is 5 months. I definately get a hunger pain if I go more than 2-3 hours without eating so I do wonder if I will lose more once I stop BF.

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
Good luck with your c!
I Bf'd my 1st and didn't bf'd my 2nd and i lost weight at the EXACT same rate. For me it didn't matter if i was Bf'ing or not, the weight came off exactly at the same rate (i have both my weights charted)
I was the exact weight both time i delivered (gained 50 with my 1st and 40 with my 2nd).

Re: Breastfeeding and losing weight
If you diet- yes, the weight will likely come right off- BUT, your supply could be affected GREATLY. Your body needs certain nutrients and FATS in order to produce milk.
I refused to diet, had a fantastic supply and the weight came off, but very SLOWLY. At 8 months PP, I still had about 10 pounds to go (gained 45), but now I'm pg again, so the weight isn't coming off me thinks.
Here's my take, if the only reason you want to BF is to lose weight, maybe you should rethink, because you could be disappointed.

That's not even close to the reason why I want to breastfeed. I just read that b/f'g helps lose weight easier and I thought that was an extra perk for all the extra work that needs to go into b/f'g. So I asked you ladies your real life experiences. I know every body is different, as has been discribed here, so in a few days I'll start to find out on my own, but at this point it's just a waiting game and my mind is racing with what if's and how will it be for me. Thanks for your response.
