breastmilk question and dilemma
i have a little bit of a situation. i was on medicine and have lost most of my supply- in the process my daughter hasnt been drinking as much milk probably about half the normal becuase she was sick too. she seems to be rejecting my milk and only drinking it when she is really hungry. morning before nap evening and before bedtime. Olivia is 10 months old and when i called the pediatrician about putting her on whole milk they said no i have to wait till she is 1 year old if i cant supply im suppose to put her on formula. i find it dumb to put her on formula for 1-2 months since i bf her for so long.
my question is did moms put there kids on regular milk before the 1 year mark? and what made you decide to do this. TIA

Re: breastmilk question and dilemma
We started doing a little bit of milk around 11 months but they really need to calories and nutrients in formula/breastmilk before a year from what I understand.

Re: breastmilk question and dilemma
What if you pump and then mix it with whole milk? I do know of someone that put her daughter on whole milk at 6 months because nothing was working and she finally decided to listen to her dad and she was like a different baby, this was also 11 years ago though.

Re: breastmilk question and dilemma
my friend's ped recommends milk at 11 months, so that at the 12 month check up, he can see how they're doing on it (since the next visit is months later)
Though, I don't think there's anything wrong with having her on formula for a couple of months.

Re: breastmilk question and dilemma
i dont want her on formula becuase i worked 10 long and hard months to bf her and feel that at this point why even bother. shes growing and healthy why not give her regular milk or mix bm with the whole milk.

Re: breastmilk question and dilemma
My only knowledge on this subject is a trip to the ER we had to make when dd was 2 months old.
The baby in the room with us was 10 months old and pooping a lot of blood- I heard 3 different ER Dr.'s tell the parents it was because the baby was on whole milk and shouldn't be until at least a year. Hope this helps!
I wouldn't feel bad about the formula- 10 months of bf is HUGE accomplishment and starting formula for a month or 2 won't take away from that.

Re: breastmilk question and dilemma
I think I supplemented a little when I wasn't producing enough while pumping at work. I cried!!!
I know how you are feeling..
Do you exclusively BF? Try adding a few pumping sessions at night while your baby is sleeping. I might help increase your supply. I would pump at night and 4am just to get enough milk! Drink plenty of water, eat oatmeal and you may want to try Fenugreek.

Re: breastmilk question and dilemma
I nursed for 9months and my milk started drying up. My Doc. said put her on formula until she is a year. So I did. I figured if it is what is the best, then I would do it.
