I don't know about breastfeeding but I'm pumping and it doesn't hurt at all. Good Luck!

Re: Breatfeeding
It did not hurt me at all, that is one of the signs as to whether the baby is latched correctly, BREASTFEEDING SHOULD NOT HURT

Re: Breatfeeding
In the beginning your nipples are not used to it so they can be sore in the first few weeks. It is very important that your baby latches on correctly and then it should not be painful. An incorrect latch will be cause your nipples to become very sore. This could lead to infection.
If you are going to pump make sure the flanges (the part where you insert your nipples in to) are big enough. The pumps come with one medium size but you may need bigger. I did.
You can also get Lanolin cream to help with soreness. I was only sore for a few weeks and BF and pumped until my son was 14 months. If you are experiencing pain/soreness you should talk to a lactation consultant at the hospital or when you get home to show you how to get the baby to latch properly.

Re: Breatfeeding
As others have said, breastfeeding should not hurt. In the beginning my nipples were sore but only for about 2 days. I also used the lanolin for the 1st 2 days. 2 weeks later we are doing great. Pumping doesn't hurt either.

Re: Breatfeeding
Some people get it perfect from the start and don't feel pain. I on the other hand didn't and it took some time to get the latch perfect and to heal, but then it was painless. Pumping shouldn't hurt, although you may feel quite silly in the beginning -- I felt like a cow so much more with the pump than I ever did nursing!

I could have written this word for word. The chapping of the nipple was awful, but worth it.
