Brentwood schools budget passes by six votes
Wow, sometimes it really IS true that every vote counts! I'm not posting on whether or not it should have passed, just the fact that 6 votes was the margin!

The newly elected Brentwood school board members worried yesterday that their first year as trustees would be on an austerity budget as results from the vote remained too close to call.
But when affidavit ballots were tallied last night, the district's $295-million budget proposal prevailed by six votes.
"It was a very close, narrow margin, but a win is a win," Superintendent Donna Jones said.
Officials spent yesterday verifying that the 19 ballots were cast by registered voters before counting them at about 7 p.m. Late Tuesday, the vote in favor of the proposed budget was 1,039 to 1,036. The affidavit ballots - paper ballots on which voters swear they are qualified to vote - pushed the results to 1,046 to 1,040.

I think it's terrible that in one of the biggest districts, that only 2,000 came out to vote!

I believe that Brentwood is now the biggest district, although I could be wrong.
I'm in Pat-Med, which is a big one too, and the turnout is horrible. I don't get it.
If you don't vote, you have no right to complain!!

I grew up in Brentwood and I teach adult ESL there now.
I can say that despite the large number of students in the district, there aren't a lot of eligible voters. There is a high immigrant population here illegally.

I was going to say the same thing.
My sister works in the district and a few years ago when the budget was defeated and put back up the teachers were encouraging the students to get their parents to vote and many students responded that there parents can not vote since the are here illegally.

I thought Sachem was the biggest district on the Island. I could be wrong tho.
I went to Brentwood K-12, this isn't a new problem. Getting people out to vote on the budget has always been an issue, more often than not it fails. I'm always surprised when it passes. It's sad for the students, but the residents just don't want to/can't pay higher taxes.

I don't think anymore. Friends of ours work in Brentwood schools as teachers and I believe they have surpassed Sachem. When I graduated in 99, Sachem was the biggest on LI, and one of the biggest in the nation.
