Brett Favre is Now a Jet.
ESPN is reporting on it right now...
It's official, he's been traded to the Jets.
Thoughts?
I think it's a great thing! Chad Pennington, though not a terrible QB just doesn't have the arm that Favre has. Plain and simple.
Pennington has the smarts, which is important, but his arm just can't deliver. I've seen him throw one too many floaters... not to mention the injuries.
This could make the Jets a playoff team.
Of course, I would have LOVED to have seen him go to Minnesota, since I'm convinced he would have led them to the Superbowl, but if he's not there, I can live with him being in NY.

NOOOOOO... I could cry for Chad. I just met him last week and he is the nicest guy!! I just feel so sad. And Brett never wanted the Jets. Chad loved them. I realize his arm just isn't there. But at training camp it honestly looked a lot better. He really worked hard in the off season and I thought he should be given a chance!
He better win!!!! Maybe that will make me feel better.
I wonder where Chad will go!

Speculation is he could possibly go to: Minnesota, KC (where Herm Edwards is) or Miami (where Parcells is. Remember he's the one who drafted Pennington in the first place.)
Pennington could be a good match for Minnesota. Again, they have a good d-line so he could stay in the pocket without getting killed and he doesn't have to throw the ball a ton plus they have a good running game.

Re: Brett Favre is Now a Jet.
i think the whole Favre thing got SO ridiculous and out of hand... i mean, even after he "retired" the Packers said they had a spot for him if he wanted to come back, and he STILL said no... four months later he decides he wants to come back and they say no, we've got our quarterback, so he throws a hissy fit? i mean, come on. i lost SO much respect for him - and he was my all-time favorite quarterback, ever.
so as a giants fan, i am thrilled because i think he is going to stink this year

Just b/c he retired doesn't mean his contract expired and that was the catch. So when he came out of retirement and was reinstated he had a contract to fulfill.
Now the catch is that he wasn't going to be the starting QB and lets face it, he's not going to want to sit the bench so he started entertaining the notion of going elsewhere.
The rub with that (for the Packers that is) is that Favre was looking at the Vikings. The problem with that for the Packers is that they're in the same division and yes, with a solid QB like Favre, the Vikings are poised to be superbowl contenders without doubt. They have some of the best offensive and defensive linemen and that's what a seasoned QB like Favre is going to look for. He wants a team that's going to protect him.
Obviously, the Packers aren't going to let him be traded to such a team, hence the drama started.
It's about winning and $$$. It could have all been over with had the Packers org let Favre go where he wanted but they don't want to face off against him with a team like MN in their division.

Re: Brett Favre is Now a Jet.
I like the deal - but here's what I've said as soon as Farve and the Jets were mentioned in the same sentence 1. He's 38 2. He now has to learn a new offensive system after being with the Packers for so long 3. Passing is a 2 way street. Do the Jets have the receivers to catch his passes? Coles is aging. Cotchery is decent at best 4. This is not a long-term solution. What are the Jets doing to groom the next young QB of the future? Say Farve stays with us 1-2 years, and in his last year, we make the playoffs. Now, he leaves, we have a bad draft pick in the first round, making it questionable as to whether or not we can draft a good QB out of the gate. But, despite all of this, he's Brett Farve. Hall of Fame QB. Jets will be right in the playoff hunt this year

Re: Brett Favre is Now a Jet.
YEAH!!!!!
I know he's got to learn a new offense..and the new playbook and work with guys/coaches he's not used to, but come on, he's BRETT FAVRE! If anyone can do it, he can.
I don't feel bad about Chad Pennington, yes, it kind of sucks, but he should go to the Vikings, he will be a starter and not have to compete for the position.

Yes, you're right he is 38 and yet he still has a better arm than Pennington.
I think he's got the skills to learn a new offensive system. He's by far one of the best QBs to ever play the game.
Laveranues Coles still has game. He's a damn good receiver with a lot of game left in him. IMO at least. Not to mention, now that he's got someone who can actually throw the ball down field he won't be as big a sitting duck for the offensive line playing against him.
As for the long term... who's to say what happens. Maybe in the interim they'll find themselves a decent back up QB that can be groomed to take over when BF finally retires for good and they won't have to worry as much about what draft picks they get.

As a Jet fan I do not think it is the best thing they did but I guess we have to wait and see what Brett does this coming season. His age is a factor, really how much longer can he actually play another year or 2.

Re: Brett Favre is Now a Jet.
This move makes no sense to me. He is going to a team that has just about zero chance of making it to the SB and he is just going to retire again at the end of this year.

Yes, of course it looks good on paper and we'll have to wait and see what really becomes of it but that holds true for everything...nothing in this world is a sure thing.

I'm not saying they'll be superbowl contenders this season, but certainly the playoffs aren't out of the question.
Heck, if the Giants could get to the superbowl and win, the Jets can get to the playoffs.

no doubt - the desire and the arm is there
but 1 man does not a playoff contender make
the whole team has to step up
do the jets have the receivers? Remains to be seen because they never had the chance to shine with Chad at the helm
The Jets signed a bunch of players to the OL -they sound promising, but we have to see how that shakes out.
Unfortunately, I'm a jaded Met fan and Jet fan. I've been through disappointment after disappointment. I've seen countless press conferences, introducing players who were going to help us win championships.
Nada.
So, for now, all I will guarantee is that the Jets will be competitive. Whether or not that equals a playoff run remains to be seen.

One teams success has nothing to do with any others. Dont forget the Jets still have to play NE 2x, Buffalo 2x and Miami 2x. All of those teams are better than they were last year as well. I predict the Jets will be no better than 7-9...and although Favre has never missed a game in a crazy number of years it could happen this year, keep in mind he is on the cover of Madden 2009 for all video game systems and that carries the Madden curse with it.
