Britney's Family: Dr. Phil Violated Trust
Britney Spears family is accusing Dr. Phil McGraw of violating their trust by his public statements about his hospital visit with the troubled pop star and his call for her to receive therapy.
Family spokeswoman Lou Taylor, a business manager for mother Lynne and daughter Jamie Lynn Spears, appeared on Wednesday's Today show and also said that at no time had the family planned to do a show with McGraw, despite his statements about such a program. (McGraw later said the scheduled episode would not go on as originally planned.)
"He was not invited to make this a public display," said Taylor.

Re: Britney's Family: Dr. Phil Violated Trust
although i am not sure why they are upset since everything Britney does is made public usually by her own stupidity, it was wrong of Dr Phil to talk to the public without permission.
Isnt that the #1 doctor/patient rule

But that is what his entire career is based on. It really saddens me.

Re: Britney's Family: Dr. Phil Violated Trust
He's not a Dr. as in, an MD is he ?? Does he even HAVE a PhD ?? OR did he take Psych 101 and just call himself Dr. Phil ??
Even if you're not an MD, as a psychologist or therapist or social worker or whatever, isnt' there some sort of privacy code of ethics ?? -
I hate that man -

He has a PhD, but it's in Anthropology or sme field unrelated to Psychology. He is not a clinical psychologist. Privacy rules don't come in to play in this case unfortunately.

Re: Britney's Family: Dr. Phil Violated Trust
I'm not sure exactly what it's in, but one of my psych professors when I was in college knew him (hated him) and told us his degree was not related to pyschology. But i just looked him up on wikipedia and it says it is.

Re: Britney's Family: Dr. Phil Violated Trust
This is an excerpt from Wikipedia:
Ethical violation The Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists imposed disciplinary sanctions on McGraw on January 27, 1989 for an inappropriate "dual relationship" reported in 1988 by a therapy client/employee from 1984. McGraw was ordered by the Board to take an ethics class, pass a jurisprudence exam, complete a physical evaluation, undergo a psychological evaluation and have his practice supervised for one year in order to continue his private practice in Texas. McGraw admits to giving the client a "job" at his office (which is not allowed), but denied carrying on a sexual relationship with the 19 year old, who says their relationship was "sexually inappropriate."[10][2][11] As of 2008, McGraw is still not licensed to practice psychology.

Re: Britney's Family: Dr. Phil Violated Trust
I can't stand Phil and I did a little research. He apparently does have a PhD in clinical psychology from North Texas State University, not in anthropology. So, he technically does have a doctorate in psychology. That said, he is not LICENSED to practice psychology in the states of California or Texas. This means, he's not authorized to practice psychology independently. He is also not a member of the American Psychological Association. This basically means he's not bound to a variety of ethical codes that would be imposed by the APA and the state licensing board.
