BTDT Moms- Bris Question- UPDATED QUESTION
Hello! We are expecting a boy this time around and are planning on having a bris.
I was skimming through my insurance paperwork and noticed that if you have the circumcision in the hospital it is covered. The two mohels that have been recommended to me are actually physicians (one pediatrician and one urologist).
I'm wonding if anyone had any luck submitting the mohel's fee to the insurance co for at least partial re-imbursement? I'm just curious if it's worth bothering.
TIA!
UPDATED QUESTION: So now, based on everyone's response, I'm curious what the amount of a normal donation would be?

Re: BTDT Moms- Bris Question
nope, ours wasn't covered (although it would have been if we elected to do it in the hospital). but you should still check with your insurance.

Re: BTDT Moms- Bris Question
The mohels do NOT charge fees-it's against the rules. Performing a bris is a mitzvah and can not be paid for. Instead, a donation to the mohel's temple of choice is made.
A donation of course, can not be submitted to the insurance company.
Good luck! ( I would still go with the mohel! )

Interesting! I am sure so many of them do not go with the whole Mitzvah flow and actually charge for their services. Ours was more traditional and just expected a substantial donation to his temple. My parents actually wanted to finance the bris and I believe they donated about the same amount as you mohel charged you.
You know, I am pretty sure that the temple probably gives the mohel some part of that donation but technically they are NOT suppose to accept money for that service.
But hey, everyone gotta live, ya know!

Thanks so much for the info. I hadn't actually contacted either of the mohels yet, but I just assumed there was a fee associated with the procedure. I still intend to use a mohel.
Very interesting though. I didn't realize they didn't charge a fee, but rather a donation. I guess that makes sense considering our Rabbi didn't charge a fee for the baby naming ceremony for our daughter, but we made a donation to his discretionary fund.

Ours didn't chage for our daughters baby naming either. We did make a donation to the local temple where the ceremony was performed though.
But you can't compare the amount of skill that it take to perform a baby naming to the amount of skills it takes to perform a bris, KWIM?
So, I am not at all surprised that many mohels do change a fee of some kind. These are not biblic times, ya know! We all have mortgage to pay
As far as the amount of donation, as I mentioned my parents did about $600 or $700 dollar for the bris. For the baby naming we did les, I think $300.
When you ask them they just say: whatever you can, which is not very helpful. BUt if it is a fee than it is a set number, i am sure. HTH!

Are you considering Dr. Greenbaum (the ped) or Dr. Diamond (the urologist)? We wanted Greenbaum, but she was booked so she recommended Diamond. He did a really good job. We're having our second son in a few weeks and are taking the Mohels' phone numbers to the hospital this time. Last time we called the day after his birth and it was too late for Greenbaum. I think we paid Dr. Diamond $700. He did a great job, my son didn't even cry.
