BTDT Moms of DC diagnosed as hypotonic, please come in

At DD's 12 mo appointment on Friday our ped referred us to see a PT and gave us what she referred to as a 'soft' diagnosis for DD being hypotonic. I'm waiting for the PT practice to call me back to schedule, but I wanted to find out from those that have been through this what we can expect as we move forward, as hard as that is since I'm sure every case is different.

DD is just over a year old, does not crawl (though she rolls everywhere, and with quite a bit of speed and accuracy), is just starting to pull up and gets up on her knees only, can sort of stand up but only when you hold her under her arm pits. Her arm muscles are very weak, though when she's on her stomach, she can push up just fine. Cognitively and verbally, she seems to be on track and ahead even of some of her classmates at day care that are the same age or a little older. Her fine motor skills are just where they should be, too.

The ped basically said that she didn't want to lose time in case there is a more serious problem, and for that I'm grateful. My mind is just racing though with thoughts of what could be wrong, what more we could be doing to help her, etc.

I'd love to hear from others that might have gone through this and get some perspective and ideas.

Thanks.

Chat Icon At Emmy's 12 month appointment I talked to the Ped about her not walking or crawling. She would get into position, but just not move. She would stand assisted, but not unasssited and would not pull up at all. We were told she could have CP. We started PT right away and with in 2wks she was pulling up on her own, crawling, and cruising like a maniac. We ended therapy there and at 16 months we bought her braces for her feet to help hersince she would not walk on her own yet, but she HATED them. By 17 months she was walking all on her own. My MIL bought her some nesting blocks and she loved to knock them down so I put them in the middle of the livingroom and her will to destroy prevailed and she walked over. That was it and she has been walking every since. She had ALWAYS done very well with fine motor and language, but her gross motor was not great. She had lots of "low tone". Now at 18 months she just started running and you would never know she was later to walk. I say start with PT and go from there. Her CP diagnosis was so scary for me, but in the end she was just stubborn. I truely believe she just refused to walk until she could do it without falling. FM ANYTIME.

Liz, our Daughter, Donna, now an adult, was diagnosed with benign congenital hypotonia, when she did not walk on time. CP was ruled out, and she saw specialists, boiling down to her wearing shoes with a Thomas heel. We had special prayer for her at Church, after hearing she might have physical difficulties some day, especially in gym class. She's totally fine now!!!! Mary
