BTDT Mom's re: Breast Pumps

I'm due fairly soon and I have a few questions re: breast pumps I'm hoping someone can help me with.

1. My insurance does not cover or offer any benefits for the purchase of a breast pump. Does Edgepark offer a discount for breast pumps without any insurance back-up?

2. I registered for the Medela Freestyle, but am hesitant to purchase it and then find I am unable to pump and then can't return it. Thus, I was going to rent one until I knew for certain I could pump. Who have you used for renting pumps? I know BRU offers rentals, but I'm sure there are more options available.

3. A friend has generously offered to let me borrow her Original Medela Pump-in-Style (not advanced), but upon reading the Medela website, it stated that I shouldn't borrow used pumps (Medela FAQ). I was going to purchase new tubing/shields, but now IDK what I should do.

Any advice that could be offered would be greatly appreciated. I have to return to work within 12 weeks after birth and I hope to BF and pump once I go back to work.

My advice would be to hold off on purchasing a pump until you're sure BFing will work out for you. Maybe look into renting one at first and then if you decide to continue you can purchase one.

I rented a hospital grade pump from a pharmacy and ended up using that the whole time I pumped. DD was a preemie so the NICU staff advised me to do so.

Ditto- I did this as well. I had to start pumping in the hospital because DS would not latch so the hospital gave me a whole set of shields and tubing. I then rented the same pump for the first month. When I went back to work I borrowed a MPISA and used my own shields/tubing. Still using the same pump at almost 1 year!

For the next baby though, since I know BFing will work- I am buying the freestyle.

Yes- I believe edgepark is cheaper than the stores but once you use a 20% coupon I think it's about the same.

i bought the medela freestyle and it was a sort of waste of money for me. it worked great (fast and painless) but i just had no milk supply! my BFF needed a new pump after hers broke so she borrowed mine. she just got new tubing and shields and says it works great!
( i think as long as it was well taken care of and washed thoroughly after every use you should be fine with new tubing and shields)

My advice pretty much. Rent from the hospital so you know BFing works out. Then buy one if it does. I bought the Ameda Purely Yours.

I agree with renting one first. The hospital can help provide you with a rental. You don't want to waste your money in case BF doesn't work out and besides, the hospital grade pumps are a million times better than regular pumps anyway!

As far as borrowing goes, I did that with my friends PIA for a week or so because I was waiting for my Freestyle to be delivered. I just bought all new tubing, accessories, etc.

Re: BTDT Mom's re: Breast Pumps

I bought my pump a few weeks before my due date so that I could return it within the 90 days if BFing didn't work.

The FDA doesn't recommend sharing pumps because even with new tubing breast milk "particles" can get in the motor and go into the next person's milk:

Betsy - I know what is says about borrowing pumps - but part of that is really about the warranty. Get the new shields, tubing etc and borrow you know who's pump and it will be fine.

ETA: The other concerns related to transmission of disease I don't think it relevant here as you know exactly where the pump is coming from and you're not buying it from Craig's List or whatnot.

I agree no milk ever gets into the tubing, and you will buy all new tubing and shields. Should be fine to borrow it from your friend. if you call medela they will actually send you tubing free!!

I've had milk get into the tubing a handful of times using my Medela PISA and always kept an extra set of tubes in my bag just in case my milk overshot. I've never had that issue with my FreeStyle though. I think it's best to rent a hospital-grade pump first and if it looks like BFing/pumping will work for you, then buy a pump. I rented mine from the LCs at the hospital where I delivered.

I'm really happy with the FreeStyle and love it so much more than the PISA. I kept the PISA at work and the FreeStyle at home. The FreeStyle was convenient for vacations and anytime I was away from home for an extended period of time. It's so small and light! I know the FreeStyle is expensive (my insurance didn't cover it), but I was able to get a good price from an LC in Texas named Mindy. She's an authorized Medela dealer. Her web site isn't the best for obtaining info, but she was good to work with and her prices are in a recording on the phone.
