BTDT moms....cost of formula?
Can anyone tell me approximately how much you spent on formula a week?
DH is trying to convince me to BF (saying we'll save thousands of dollars). Of course he can say that when HE's nto the one who would be doing the work.
But it did make me curious......

for us its about $40 a week were also on special formula Neutramigen (although it seems ot be VERY common) so its about 160 a month... and they are only on it for 12 months so its baout 2k total... for me TOTALLY WORTH IT. DH could help with feedings and i was just not into doing the whole BF thing

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
It all depends on what formula and brand you are going to use.
You can buy target brand for $14.99 a can and that can can last sometimes up to 5 days.
Now my son is on nutrmigen and thats $35.00 a can ( i was buying a big can at bru)
but recently our ins picked up the cost and is paying for 11 cans a month

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
Similac was $25 a can for about 25oz. That would last about 4-5 days, if I am remembering correctly.

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
When he was doing 8oz bottles (32oz a day), it was about $120/mo. We used Similac powder and got the big can from Costco which was $30 and last us a week. It takes several mos for them to build up to 32oz a day though so a can lasts you a while in the beginning.

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
Like a previous poster said it depends on the formula. DD was on Similac Sensitive and it was $25 a can and that lasted a little less than a week totaling $125 a month.
Once I started using Target brand it was $15 for almost a week and about $75 a month.

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
I wish I had my Baby Bargains book with me - they go over how much you could (on average) save over just the first 6 months by BFing. I want to say the average is something like $2,000 per year, and for twins, obviously double that.
That said, it's a LOT of work for just one child, let alone twins. I think her username is CJMommy? She successfully EBF her twin boys until a year. It CAN be done. But that doesn't mean it will be easy. And I think it's a very personal decision to make.

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
what kind of water do you use with the powdered formula? I don't have a water jug, but I have a water spout on my fridge. I know my sister used to buy the gallons of baby water.

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
I was on Similac and Enfamil's mailing lists, so was my mother. I used both of our coupons. I would buy at CVS a lot, bc I would get their "Spend $20 get $5 off" and then use a Similac coupon too.
I was coupon obsessed. I refused to pay full price.

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
At 6 months we switched to formula since my milk dried out. He had supplemented from time to time with Similac so we just went straight to that.
We would get it at BJs or Costco...at the time it was $25 and we used $5 similac checks so it was about $20 and one can lasted a week.

We use Target brand of the Gentlease and have had no problems.
I just read an article about tap water and it may contain too much lead, so we only use the fridge water. I wouldn't waste the $ on the gallons of water. As long as the filter works, fridge water is fine. (just my opinion of course!)

I should probably replace the filter for the fridge though!

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
I use Nutramigen and it is $$$! We spend ~ $300 / month on it. Our insurance denied us.
Next time around I will give BF-ing another try... Just because I want to but if it doesn't work out again I will have no problems going to formula. DS is doing GREAT on Nutrimigen.

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
I used RTF and bought it by the case at BRU (the cheapest at the time) and it was around $36 or $38. It would last about a week.

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
We use RTF & buy it by the case (8 1 quart bottles) at BJ's for $39.99 (similac sensitive). Right now, at 5 months, my DS uses 1 quart a day, so we go through a case every 8 days for a grand monthly total of $160

Why did I think formula was much more expensive? Btw, what is RTF?

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
DH is absolutely right. You would be saving thousands of dollars if you BF. DD#1 was on Similac Sensitive DS which is approximately $6 per 32oz. bottle. She drank 1 to 1.5 bottles per day.
DD#2 has a milk protein allergy and has to have Similac Alimentum formula. It costs $9.50 per 32oz. A case of it costs $54.00 for 6 bottles, which is almost a week's supply. So, right now, we are paying approximately $220 per month in formula and DD#2 is only 8 weeks old.

RTF= Ready To Feed. This is formula that does not need to mixed with water. Just pop open the container and pour into the baby's bottles. In the case of my DD, she will only take RTF formula. I tried to save $$ and use the powder but she just gagged and threw it up.

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
Gave him Similac Advanced for the first couple of months, then he got a milk protein allergy and was on alimentum which is pricey like an above poster mentioned.
Insurance also didn't cover it, although you can ask for a few samples, but they tend to be limited.
He is now on soy, and I purchase him Target brand. It is around $13.50 a can at my local Target and lasts for a week----however my IL's also purchase formula because he stays there during the week when I am at work. Very generous of them.
They buy him Similac though.
My ped told me he wants him to stay on the formula until 18 months at least because of his alllergies.
For me, I decided not to BF because I was going back to work right away. My SIL BF twins but was only able to keep up with it for about 5 or 6 months.

Re: BTDT moms....cost of formula?
WE spend about $20 a week on similac( we also cut alot of coupons) To me, i tried BFing and would up not producing enough milk. But found that out after i purchased the $300 breast pump. I figure once you figure out the cost of the BFing supplies versus the formula you may save 500-1000 in a year. that's my guess.
