Bummer . . .(about milk in sippy) & another random milk question

I thought I was done with bottles. . .nope. He refused milk in his sippy tonight at bedtime, (so I caved & gave it to him in a bottle). . . should I keep trying? or it's fine, no biggy just try again in a month?

WWYD?

(he does fine with the sippy in the morning & afternoon. Although this morning, i could tell he missed it but did fine)

Also, do "schedule" milk like you did when DC was on bottle or just give milk throughout the morning and with lunch?

sorry for all the questions

I just started to get DD off the bottle 3 days ago. I'm trying to do what I did with my first DD. I give her the sippy for breakfast and lunch and try random times throughout the day. She takes maybe 6 oz in total during the day so I give her a full 8 oz bottle at night. As she gets used to the sippy more and takes more milk duriing the day I start to decrease the night bottle until she was eventually off the night bottle or just transitioned to a night sippy. It took about a month I think. Hope it works again.Chat Icon

I thought Ty would be much easier then he's been to transition.

He technically gets three bottles a day now. The morning and pm are always bottles. I TRY to get him to drink the afternoon milk out of a sippy. Some days he does, some days he doesn't so I give him the bottle if he didn't drink that much.

I have been trying to give him the milk in the sippy after eating things that would make him thirsty (like his little cookies) and that sometimes works.

Jack was fully off bottles at 15 months so I am giving myself a bit of time. My ped said if he finds comfort in a bottle there is no need to take it away at a year! Chat Icon

Ann gets a bottle when she wakes up and one before bed because I know she will down them. She's never refused milk in a sippy or straw cup but for right now, I like to know the minimum she is getting by having those two bottles (since I never know exactly how much milk she has during the day at daycare).

Anyway, my original "plan" was to get rid of them at 15 months. Now it will either be on our Disney trip or at 18 months.

Thanks ladies! This is helpful.

So maybe for now I'll still continue with his nighttime bottle b/c he DOWNED his 6oz tonight in his bottle & continue with morning and afternoon.

good idea. He probably took a total of 6oz throughout the day too and then DOWNED 6oz tonight, so I should've done 8 to make sure he's gotten enough for the day.

I wouldnt sweat it.....Eddies nighttime bottle was the last to go.

Try giving him a sippy before you put him to bed and see what happens. Then I used to just rock Eddie and read him a book.

when you took the bottle away, you gave sippy out in the den then rocked and read?

That's the thing, he knows it's night time b/c it's lights out, music on, bottle in his rocking chair then bed. . .so I think he's just use to that routine (so am I too) & this random sippy he's like HEY what is going on MOM!!!

Yup, he would drink it like the last 1/2 hour before bed. Then he was full and didnt really want more. I would give him the sippy before bed, then cut back the # of oz in the bedtime bottle and wean him off it. You just need to create a new routine, its just an adjustment period. He'll get used to it.

We are having the same issue, but when i talked to the dr today at his 1 year appt, he wasnt concerned at all.

He says HE recommends to try and get them off the bottle by 15 months. Which made me feel a little better. I am hoping Travis will eventually just wean himself.

Re: Bummer . . .(about milk in sippy) & another random milk question

WE had the same problem with my DS (he is 18 months now) at 12 months. He would only drink milk out of a bottle...I tried every sippy out there and finally found one that works and doesn't leak! It is made by Pampers called Stage 4...it blue, has a soft spout and he loves it! I got it at BRU but also saw it at CVS recently. He has been drinking milk only from it for a few months but now drinks milk from anything now..they were a lifesaver!!

Re: Bummer . . .(about milk in sippy) & another random milk question

The night time bottle was the last to go when we took DS off bottles. We dropped one at a time, and he was fully off around 15-16 months. My ped said milk isn't the same as formula and they don't need as much. I want to say 12-16 ounces a day. It's not their primary source of nutrition as formula was so they don't need as much.
When we finally dropped the last bottle, we gave DS milk in a sippy cup (actually he really liked the take and toss straw cups) and started to reduce the amount in his bottle by a few ounces every few nights until he wasn't expecting to calm himself with the bottle.

Re: Bummer . . .(about milk in sippy) & another random milk question

we cut all bottles at the same time at 11.5 mos. What kind of sippy are you using?

We use munchkin cups - the straw sippy for water and the soft spout with handles for milk. It didn't seem like there was a huge difference between the silicone bottle nipple and the soft silicone spout cup for him, he didn't give us any problems.

Chat Icon try that cup!
