burning a scented candle before an open house?
a good idea or a bad idea. if you have no bad odors but you just want a pretty smell is this a good idea? will someone think you are trying to cover up some bad smell?

I wouldn't mind a candle at all.

Re: burning a scented candle before an open house?
Eh, I honestly think it doesn't really matter.
If the house smells bad, then that's a problem. But some people are very sensitive to even good smells, like perfume or scented candles. So if you do burn a candle, I'd make sure it's not overpowering.
The appearance of the home is definitely most important.
If you want to have an inviting smell, I would maybe just boil some water with vanilla and/or a cinnamon stick in it beforehand, and then open the windows to make sure the house is aired out and fresh.
If you have a basement, I would be conscious of smells there. Many people fear water issues if they smell mildew/mustiness, but in truth, most basements smell that way unless they are well-ventilated. So take care to run a dehumidifier in advance (even during the open house) and/or open the windows.

I love the smell of candles, but when we were looking at houses, I was suspicious of candles or incense burning because I was wondering what they were trying to cover up.

I might think someone was trying to cover up a smell if it was too much of a candle smell

I agree. If it is a smell that is not too overbearing, then I wouldn't think twice about it

I would not do it. I am VERY sensitive to smell and it would turn me off.
Maybe have cookies in the oven instead :)

Ok. No bad smells just wanted a comforting smell, but there is no need so I won't thank you

Good idea. It immediately gives a potential buyer a good association with the house. When I went in and smelled like the apple pie one or whatever, it makes you think of home. Whether it works or not to make someone buy a house, I don't know, but it can't hurt!

Ooooohhh! Nice.
Definitely no candle. I am one who doesn't like their artificial odors. Peach ones remind me of garbage that needs dumping, for example.

I ALWAYS have candles burning in the house. When we sold our house, we had them on for every open house and individual showing (because that's what my house was normally like). Our agent made me blow them out for the inspection and brought the idea up that the inspector might e suspicious of all the candles. I will say that our house was on the market for 3 months total- 3 open houses - 3 offers (eventually one for full price), so I don't think candles harmed us!

Re: burning a scented candle before an open house?
I personally wouldn't do it. If I went to see a house and it had a scented candle (or scented anything really) I would wonder if they were masking an odor. Not saying it would make me not buy the house but I'd definitely be suspicious.
