Bus drivers, bus stops, and ... I have no idea how to title this. Just come in and offer insight. Thanks.
So DS is going into second. The bus says they only return back to school if a kid is in kindergarten and there's no parent present.
It just seems kind of nuts to me. I'll be relying on childcare to be there at the bus stop but now I'm worried. I'm getting a case of the "what ifs."
What do people do? Any advice? :(

That IS insane.
Do you know any other parents at the bus stop? A neighbor who is usually home where your DC could go knock if nobody picks up?

I don't. I'm so uneasy about it. Aftercare isn't an option either.
I'm just surprised. I'm going to have the sitter text so I know she's headed to bus stop. I really hate this. I guess I could have her pick him up at school. Ugh.

I would get to know your neighbors or have the sitter pick your child up from school. Frankly, I would do both.

I don't really have neighbors in the traditional sense. I think I'll just have sitter pick up at school.
Still sounds crazy to me.

This seems off to me. What if the child doesn't have a key to get into their house?

Unfortunately this is normal. Sometimes the bus drivers are nice, and make sure there is a parent, but that's not typically the case.

Can your child walk home by themselves? How far is the bus stop?

I think the concern is that a. her child is going into 2nd grade, so is probably 6 or 7, and b. that her babysitter won't be there due to an unforeseen circumstance and the child will be left outside or worse coming from the bus stop to the house.
My child was let off a bus and wasn't even supposed to be on that bus. He was wandering around the neighborhood, had no idea what to do, luckily a school aide had been driving by and saw him and called the school, who called me! Meanwhile I was AT the school parked in front to pick him up when I got a call that he was seen. The school failed him that day. He was supposed to stay after like he did every Tuesday. They are lucky he didn't get ran over. He also has special needs, so his thought process is much different than a typical kid. Bus drivers don't usually care to make sure someone is there to get the child.

This is the norm in my district. The bus driver makes sure all kindergarteners have an adult to meet them off the bus, after that, it is at their discretion.

That is how it is with every school though. This is not unusual. I think then after-care should be an option for days like that.

And they are not supposed to past Kindergarten. That is how it is at every school that I know of and has been for many, many years.

It just seems crazy to me. What if a sitter or parent isn't there due to something happening? Then what? You know what I mean? Even if your 6, 7, 8 year old has a key and cell, they are still babies.
I'll figure it out. Just scary to think of!

I'm not sure what you mean. My son was to stay after for a school related function. The school screwed up, as did the bus driver IMO, it had nothing to do with going to aftercare or not. Aftercare wouldn't have made a difference in him being let of the bus he shouldn't have been on to begin with.

Re: Bus drivers, bus stops, and ... I have no idea how to title this. Just come in and offer insight. Thanks.
This is interesting. My district will not allow a child, grade 2 and under, to leave school building as a walker, or get off a bus without an adult at the bus stop. I was under the impression it was standard in NY as I believe it is the standard around us. My bus driver will actually wait for a 5th grader if the parent/nanny isn't at the stop who always is there.
Etd...in our district schools are K-1st, then 2nd -5th. our drivers must be great because I know parents on other routes say they wait for them too if a parent or nanny isn't at the stop unless the driver knows the child has permission to go home alone. But it is a rule a 2nd grader must have someone for them at the bus stop, or standing at the school for the walkers.

Our school has the same policy, but our bus driver would NEVER let a 1st or 2nd grader off without someone being there.
I would talk to your bus driver and let them know not to leave your LO unless your sitter is there. Make sure you sitter is authorized to pick them up in case she ever has too.

If there is no care at home or care that might not be able to be available for some days, then after-care could and should be a back up. Not sure if that is your situation or just the other posters.
I think I heard your story on Sachem Moms last year.

Unfortunately they can't do that. They are not responsible for waiting for someone to be there for a child after kindergarten. That is why I suggested after-care. You can sign up and you usually only pay if you use it. You can call last minute if the sitter can not be there for pick up so you don't have to worry where your child is.

Oh okay. That is not my situation, as I posted the story above regarding my son. It had nothing to do with no one being home for him, or a sitter. It had to do with the school making a horrible mistake.

I guess it's different by me. Even though they have that written policy, they wouldn't leave a child without having someone the child knows pick them up.
