Bus issues

DD just started K and she loves it.
I noticed that the activities we attend and the neighbors we talk with tend to have a real BIG issue with the bus. I havent noticed much accept the one day when dd almost didnt get off. Well apparently, people are talking and the bus driver is yelling at the kids, the principal has rode the bus multiple times, shoes have been thrown around the bus hitting the bus driver in the head, dd claims she doesnt wear a seatbelt along with her friends bc they "dont know how", oh and my parents next door neighbors 5th grader wont ride the bus anymore. When I confront dd with any of the parents issues she just tells me the bus is fine. Is this a normal situation to be so out of control? I am hearing it at her dance class as well. She gets on in the development I grew up in so I know many of the neighbors all having issues.

Re: Bus issues

I would go on the bus and show her how to use it. Then I would call the transportation company and complain about the driver.

It doesn't sound like the kids are being paid attention to.

Re: Bus issues

Ive experienced a few bus issues in the past. Sometimes all you need are a few bad eggs on the bus to make things a living HE**.

Part of the issue sometimes is parents inabilities to see that their children could possibly be the ones who cause the issue. Sometimes it's b/c the bigger kids are being mean to the younger kids. Sometimes it's the little kids not sitting in their seats. I could go on and on.

If you're not happy about something pick up the phone and call the principal or the transportation company and ask.

If the bus is over crowded. (As buses are now a days due to budget constraints) the bus driver may not be able to control the children. Can you imagine driving around 50 elementary school students and pay proper attention the road?

Re: Bus issues

Just wanted to add that kids on dd's bus don't wear seat belts, and there is a school policy that the bus driver/school staff are not allowed to teach them how. Not sure why......Maybe someone else knows?

In my district, parents are not allowed to step foot on the bus and if they try, the bus driver has orders to call the police. Crazy, I know... but you never know.

They should be having bus safety drills in school, teaching the little ones how to safely enter and exit the bus and how to buckle and unbuckle their seatbelts, also what to do in case of an emergency.

I would call the school and ask about this.

I have never heard of a bus driver being instructed to NOT teach a kid how to buckle his or her seatbelt Chat Icon

Re: Bus issues

When DS was in pre-k, they had a bus workshop day that allowed parents to board the bus and go over with your child how to buckle and sit in the bus seat. They had a bus matron who buckled each in also. Now that he is in K, everythings crazy. No bus rules, no workshop for the kindergarteners, they didn't even help DS the first days of school. He was crying everyday saying he was going to get lost. He's better adjusted now, thank God.

Re: Bus issues

I do bus duty at my school & in Sept. one of us walk each K child onto the bus; make sure they are seated & buckled. For the month of Sept. this is the norm & then an 8th grade safety guard usually takes over.

We also do safety drills on the bus pointing out the emergency exits; fire extinguisher, etc.
