Business of Being Born
Anyone see Ricki Lake's movie? Any thoughts??
I just watched it and thought it was very interesting. It has raised a lot of questions for me!
ETA: sorry got the name of the movie wrong - not business of giving birth - business of being born. oops

DH and I saw it this past week (we had it on our queue for Netflix for several weeks and it came as soon as it was released!). We had heard about it through our Bradley instructor and we both really enjoyed it. It clarified and validated the reasons we've chosen the Stony Brook midwives for our birth.
I'm going to give it to my ILs for them to watch t it - they still think I should be going to an OB...

We watched it on Netflix too. It really did make me rethink what I had originally wanted as a "birth plan" - which was load up on drugs as soon as I felt pain.
I'd started to research midwives, but it doesn't seem that there are many that accept my insurance that are affiliated with North Shore, which I still want deliver in.
My husband thought it was very one-sided, but I figure everything else we have seen has been one-sided...the dr side.
If I lived closer to Stonybrook, I would consider them.
I still have a lot of thoughts......but no conclusions yet.

Maybe you could call North Shore and ask them what midwives deliver with them?

I'm not a good candidate for a mid-wife b/c of my blood clotting/blood thinner issues. I'm sticking with my high risk OB/GYN. If I didn't have any risks, I'm still not sure I'd go with anyone but an OB. But that's not the case for me anyway, so OB it must be.

I'm going with an OB, but am considering a doula as 'insurance' to obvious premature drug administration...
(my primary concern is that some Dr's may give pictocin just to speed along the delivery so it better suits the hospital schedule... it's used soooo frequently these days, IMO it has to be given sometimes a bit prematurely in some cases. The doula will buffer those situations a bit.)

A little piece of advice -- North Shore is not a natural childbirth friendly hospital. My original OB was affiliated with them -- they have a very high c-section and epidural rate -- fine if that's what you want, but not good if you want to go natural. If you really want to try for natural childbirth I would check out Winthrop instead. I delivered at Stony Brook with midwives, I know that's too far for you. There is a great midwife who delivers at Huntington Hospital -- don't know if Huntington is an option for you.
I really want to see this movie. I have to put it on my Netflix queue.

Bumping this because I just saw the movie and was going to start my own thread. I thought it was really inspiring and strengthened my desire to have a homebirth when I have a baby (someday, not PG or TTC yet). I love the idea of trusting your body and not having medical intervention when it's not necessary. I know it's not for everyone, but if you're even considering homebirth or natural birth, you should definitely check this movie out.
