Buying a drum set

DH is looking for a drum set. He would prefer used so it is less money. Anyone have any idea where he could find one? He has been looking on craigslist.

Re: Buying a drum set

DH bought one of his sets on Ebay.

Also, try Guitar Center in Huntington and the LI Drum Center. They always have great sales (don't buy regular price at the stores!)

Re: Buying a drum set

The Long Island Drum Center is really the best place as opposed to Sam Ash and Guitar Center. I am a musician and I go to all 3 places quite often and the drum center has real specialists working there. Guitar Center and Sam Ash---Very hard to find help.

Definitely, absolutely, craigslist.

Tons of people selling musical instruments for tons of $$$$$ off what a new piece would cost. And also much cheaper than buying used at places like Sam Ash too!

This is quite true! Although Sam Ash and Guitar Center are good if you need a cymbol or drum supplies. DH gets his drum sticks at all locations depending on where we are.

Also try the music stores online my DH uses- music123.com among a few others.

Re: Buying a drum set

I guess everyone is different.

my father is a latin jazz musician...has played with the best in the world...always went to sam ash.

the only time he didn't is when he was endorsed by capella.

if he's a novice, don't go crazy.

I can even see if my dad or one of his friends has a set for sale.

How about an electric drum set, then? DH has one now, so he can play without bothering the neighbors late at night. They sell nice ones for under $1500 at all the stores listed above.

He'll play thru headphones and it sounds like a realistic drum, although it's not the same as playing acoustic.

Electric dumsets are still very loud. And all electric drumsets still have a standard kick pedal (hitting an electric pad) so the kick pad will still make a ton of noise.

Obviously it's not as loud as a regular drum set. But don't expect an electric drumset to be quiet.

Re: Buying a drum set

yeah...there is no such animal as a noise free drum set.

we had a "drum" room in my house that was quasi padded...but the neighbors could still hear.

we had about 5 different drum sets in our house...including a Simmons electric set...I loved banging on that thing Chat Icon

mommy daddy mommy daddy (lol...that's a paradiddle!)

I hope for the sake of your ears he is talented...b/c my dad is a pretty awesome drummer and it still sucked! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Maybe I've lived with a drummer for too long, but I don't find the electric drum set very loud. You hear the sticks hitting the pads and the kick pad but close the door to the room and I can't hear a thing and neighbors and I can't hear him outside. The set is stationed on carpet, so maybe that helps with the noise reduction. The sound is lower than the lawn mower if that helps for perspective.

Now, when he plays his acoustic drums, that is loud, but he's having fun and that's what counts. Plus, it's one avenue to blow off steam.
