Buying Gift Cards at CVS
Hey guys,
My MIL was telling me on Thanksgiving that it is extremely dangerous to buy gift cards for other stores at a place like CVS/Stop Shop/etc. She said they charge a fee and expire faster. Is this true? I'm 8 mos preggos and don't feel like going to 6 different stores when I could buy them all at CVS. Help

see me too. I didn't know if this was something new or just my MIL's cautious ways (she's like that sometimes).

Re: Buying Gift Cards at CVS
I haven't purchased gift cards for another store, but I have purchased Amex gift cards at places like Rite Aid and there was an activation fee - maybe $3 or $4? I'm not sure about the expiration time though..I'm pretty sure it was a couple of years.

Re: Buying Gift Cards at CVS
I usually buy my giftcards at Stop and Shop - was never charged a fee unless of course the card itself has a fee associated with it (like the Amex cards have a fee, no matter where you buy them, even thru amex themselves.)
I don't know for sure about the expiration dates. I don't think the companies would go thru the trouble of making gift cards with shorter expiration dates just to give to resellers? I'd think it's a company wide policy that all gift cards expire after a certain amount of time.
The one thing that is different is that at Stop and Shop at least it takes 24 hours for them to activate the card - so you can't buy it at the register at noon and use it at 2PM. I assume they batch up all the daily transactions and send them off to the appropriate vendors nightly for activation.

I wouldn't buy the AMEX cards, this would be for stores & dining places though. I know AMEX charges (hence why I won't buy them).

Re: Buying Gift Cards at CVS
I've gotten gcs at CVS & at the grocery store, and have never been charged an extra fee. Not sure about the expiration dates, but you can check the fine print on the card.

Re: Buying Gift Cards at CVS
It's actually illegal for stores to start reducing the value of the gift card less then 13 months from activation or purchase date - I can't remember. Either way, I think it's fine to get them in regular chain stores.

Re: Buying Gift Cards at CVS
I just bought Gift Cards the other day at CVS. Was not charged extra. Like others said AMex and Visa cards to have about a $3 fee. That's why I don't buy these specifically.

Re: Buying Gift Cards at CVS
I bought a stop and shop gc there last year and did not pay a fee, and it did not expire before the 13 months the law states. It was the same policy if i would have bought it in the store.
I did also buy an amex gc, and I believe they charged me a $5 fee. I wouldn't buy them from there anymore. I think I can get the fee waived in buy them with my amex card directly through amex. We got something in the mail about doing that.

I've never had a problem buying store gift cards at places like CVS, the supermarket, etc. The only times I've been charged a fee have been when I purchased Amex or Visa gift cards -- and it's the same fee you'd be charged buying those anywhere else.

Re: Buying Gift Cards at CVS
AMEX has a fee no matter where you buy them; not sure if you get them on the website though - then maybe not
