California bans gay-to-straight 'conversion' therapy for minors

California became the first state to ban therapy aimed at changing a minor's sexual orientation from gay to straight after Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Sunday prohibiting the so-called "conversion" therapy.
“This bill bans non-scientific ‘therapies’ that have driven young people to depression and suicide,'' Brown said in a statement Sunday. "These practices have no basis in science or medicine and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery."
Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance), who introduced the measure, commended the governor and said he hoped other states would follow California's lead.
“No one should stand idly by while children are being psychologically abused, and anyone who forces a child to try to change their sexual orientation must understand this is unacceptable,” Lieu said.
Republican lawmakers called the bill an intrusion by the state into the decision of parents about how to raise their children. The conservative Pacific Justice Institute has said it will file a lawsuit alleging the measure violates constitutional protections, including the free speech rights of therapists and the right of patients to get access to information.
"The privacy concerns are fairly significant," said Matthew B. McReynolds, a staff attorney for the institute. "In our view, it's an intrusion beyond what the government has done before."

This is great. I've read horror stories such as electro shocks while watching movies of gay acts to train the brain that it's wrong. How barbaric does that sound...sickening.

The fact that this kind of "therapy" even exists in this day is so upsetting... So glad to hear they banned it!

I still can't believe this exists.
When you have right wing, ultra conservative Christianity you WILL have things that make no sense. (They are the most vocal so this comment falls to them)
They teach, openly and publicly and proudly, how bad it is to be gay. How terrible it is to be different. They have a bible in one hand and teach how wrong it is from G-ds perspective for 2 men to love each-other. And SOME people believe being gay can be "cured".
Look at Marcus Bachman. Michelle Bachmans husband. Its a disgrace to humans that people like THAT exist, who say they can "cure" you of being gay.
Wasn't there a discussion about textbooks for kids a week ago? The textbooks content is dictated that they should teach abstinence. The biggest buyer of books is Texas and they are in the heart of the bible belt.

I for one have never seen a gay to straight type camp/therapy there. Sure I've heard of them in other states but never seen one. Given as Austin is one hippie-loving gay happy place only second to probably NY & SF I think that's a HUGE generalization.
Most of people I know well or even just slightly could care less if youre gay or not. We joke, I dont care what you f--k just dont f--k with my gun!
Bible belt maps (ive looked the up) are overblown.
Yes its a red state, just like NY is blue, but the folks here are not ignorant or much different from citizens in other parts of the country. Just look our own city's mayor was invited to speak at the Dem Nat'l Conv and you know how big that was? The city was super proud of their 'boy' etc.
Just hate generalizations. Especially now that I've seen both sides.
ETA: yes probably rural 2 horse towns. Thankfully they are very far far apart. Most of the voting public lives in the major cities of Dallas,, Austin, Houston and San Antonio. We aren't all from West Texas, thanks. Ironically SA is a very Catholic Heavy town. And in the past decade more Jewish as they are making front page news for all Jewish holidays now.

Just talking about the bible thumping, right wing, ultra conservatives. Not generalizing Christians at all.
The book thing (Texas) is fueled by their christian beliefs that school should not teach anything but abstinence. So their beliefs (right wing, ultra conservatives) dictate how everyone else is taught.
All I'm saying is there is a correlation between the conservative, ultra right wing Christians and their intolerance of anything that does not fall within those parameters.
By the way? Top 10 states for teen pregnancy: (At least 6 of them are bible thumping conservative states. Maybe its time to teach the kids about sex and condoms)

Yep but we learned about sex in school and kids ARE learing about sex in San Antonio. Its a big push.
We just can't stop illegals from reproducing for benefits and since we are VERY catholic town, birth control in general is frowned on.

Not saying all teen pregnancies are illegals out for a free meal ticket. Just saying its part of our problem here. All our numbers are skewed. Census drives us crazy. Our schools are overflowing with kids.
I just read in our paper that more and more schools will be getting waivers to exceed the state limit of 22 students per class with one teacher (kindergarten). With a waiver they can have as many as they want. We can’t collect funds because most illegals will avoid the census. Makes sense, except their kids are going to our schools uses our resources. They were born and raised here in the US. They are as American as you or me, but they aren’t counted and the schools suffer. Also they travel to the newest apt complex build to send their kids to the best schools (again who can blame them?). They can’t BUILD schools fast enough here. AJ’s elementary school is less than 8yrs old and reached max capacity 3yrs ago. They are building a brand new middle school across the street from this elementary and it’s HUGE. AJ gets dibs on the elementary due to our very close proximity to it (we leave behind it and over one street). But others are transported up to 30mins drive away for school when a school is less than 5mins from them because there is no more space. The HS which AJ will go to is as large as a community college and they will need to build more. That’s even though half the students living in the area will go to magnet schools (specialty specific). Now let’s not start on all the catholic and private Christian schools though (which here is more about social rank than religion I think).
We have a VERY large medical community (as large as if not as large as the military) that means we are multicultural, multi-faith. But with the medical comes the very frank education about sex.
Pearson publishing (textbooks) sits less than a half mile from my house and they aren’t allowed to sell to in state schools (conflict of interest) but they’re made right here.
PS: says the gal who's great grand ma got knocked up at 13.

People out there are absolutely insane. Comments I've read from people (not here, mostly FB or other websites) about various topics have really made me question our society. Newsday posted a picture on FB last night from the LGBT Expo that was held yesterday in Melville of a gay couple kissing their daughter. Some of the comments on this photo were horrifying. I had to block some people's comments because they literally made me sick.
I know I just went off on a bit of a tangent but it disturbs me that people still think this way.
