California Gay Marriage Bill
Obviously 99% of the focus of the news has been on the hurricane (and rightfully so) but California's Assembly and Senate have passed the first ever gay marriage bill. It's in Schwartzenegger's hands now to veto or sign it.
What do you think he'll do?

Re: California Gay Marriage Bill
To answer my own question I really don't know. He's not your typical Republican governor, even if it's just by virtue of being married into the Kennedy clan. I really really truly hope he passes it but at this point, I have no idea what he's going to do.

This will be very interesting, and I think it depends on whether he wants to be re-elected. I lived in CA for 9 years and my hunch is most of Northern CA will not re-elect him if he vetos, and most of southern CA will not re-elect him if he doesn't veto. That is a huge generalization, but politically, CA is almost like 2 separate states. Also, I am not sure he wants to be known as the governor who "paved the way" for other states to pass their own laws.
My guess is he will veto.

Re: California Gay Marriage Bill
If they put as much effort into ending poverty as they do with stopping people from marrying the US would be a different place. This should not be on the agenda at all. How long is this going to go on. Let consenting adults marry and move on.

Governor who paved the way?
That distinction goes to Jodi Rell of Connecticut, actually. Connecticut is the first state to pass a Gay Marriage law without being forced by the courts. (GO CONNECTICUT!!!)
I would love it if Arnold passed it, but if he does I'll be shocked.

Connecticut actually passed a civil unions law, not marriage.

He's a wimp... he's already stated that he wants to see the direction the court will go first. There's a pending gay marriage suit going up to the CA supreme court, so I guess he won't make a decision until they make a decision

Here's a more detailed quote...
Gays gained the right to marry in Massachusetts last year after a series of court rulings. Vermont began offering civil unions in 2000, after a ruling by the state's Supreme Court. Earlier this year, Connecticut became the first state to approve civil unions without being forced by the courts. The law goes into effect in October.

Apparently, I stand corrected. But, I think if California passes it, it will be HUGE, and I don't think Arnold is brave enough to do that. JMO.
And BTW, i would love to see it pass, too

Can he wait that long though? I guess maybe they'll push it through so he has it. Ugh. Why can't, for once, one of these guys stand up and say "You're all being MORONS. What do you care if two people marry! Fourteen year olds can marry in Kansas but two adults who love each other can't?!?!"
Sorry for the rant, this is just one issue where I do not understand what the hell the big deal is!

No, you were right - there's a big difference between the civil unions law in Connecticut and the gay marriage law in California. This law is comprenehsive and that's why this is such a big deal.

I guess I should have expected it but there was a little bit of hope for me
This might have actually been the one thing Gray Davis would have been useful for
