CALLING ALL ATTORNEYS...advice needed
Not in the way that you think though. I have been planning to go back to school to become an attorney. I have wanted to do this for quite some time....at least the last 10 years or so, and now that I will be working in the city it will be easier for me to take some night classes at some of the schools I was considering.
The thing is, I do not want to be a litigator. I'd like to be a corporate/contract attorney in the field I currently am in (magazine publishing). I am wondering what your thoughts are, and if anyone is a "boardroom" attorney rather than a litigator or criminal attorney. The cost of going back to school is of course the same, and I am wondering if it is harder to find a good job if I am limiting myself so much.
TIA

Re: CALLING ALL ATTORNEYS...advice needed
I can offer you my experience and opinion for what it is worth. I used to work at a large law firm in NYC and now work in house at a fortune 500 company. I do only transactional work related to the offering of securities (so I have never, ever litigated). I think there are many people who only want to do transactional corporate and working in-house is def prefereable to working at a firm. However, you may have to stick it out at a firm for a few years before you go in house as many companies won't hire you without some experience at a firm. I assume some do but probably very few.
Hope this helps! Good Luck
and feel free to FM me with any questions!

I agree although you can definitely do transactional work at a firm. There are plenty of places (small and large) that handle a lot of corporate work. You really don't bcome marketable, especially for an in-house position, until after you've been practicing for at least 2-5 years. As much as you may think you want to do transactional work, you may find out it's not a great as it seems. Try to explore all of your options (both in courses and internships/summer jobs) to make sure you find an area of law that's right for you. Good luck. FM if you have any questions.
