Calling all gardeners - Do you buy plants on mail order?

If you do, which catalog/cie have you used/would recommend?

How would you rate the plants/flowers you got?

I've ordered from Springhill and Brecks. I've generally been happy. They stand by their plants and will refund anything you're not satisfied with.

You just have to keep in mind they ship SMALL plants, and sometimes they're just bare roots of older plants. You won't have an instant garden this way - it will take some time for things to fill in.

I do not recommend online nurseries unless it's some plant that you must have because you cannot find it in a local nursey. As another poster pointed out, plants are small, and bareroot and takes a long time to fill it. You also will get morer value for your money at a local nursery. I've used wayside gardens, springhill, burpee online, etc. Generally not so happy mostly with size of plants. (Not quality) What was upsetting was this tree that i really wanted and was out of stock, cost $99 plus ship in their website and just a couple of weeks ago i was at a local nursery for the same size tree for $19.99. I would recommend online nurseries for only rare plants.

I do hat my Dad does, Sophie - I check the prices around in Home Depot/Lowes and area nurseries and then whomever has the best price on what I want, I buy it there.

What about flowers? Do you buy them locally also?

I usually go to HD or Lowe's. I just get those catalogs all the time and was wondering.

Same deal. My father bought lilac bushes from a nursery. He bought rose bushes when they're on sale at Home Depot/Lowes and they have a flourishing rose garden, and he buys small flowers (azaleas, maybe) and plants them along the walk front.

I'm waiting for him to come in 2 weeks cause he said he'll help me grow specific flowers as we have no sun in our front yard, but tons in the back and he has a green thumb for these sort of things.

Make sure you don't plant too soon. We still could have freeze in early May.

Re: Calling all gardeners - Do you buy plants on mail order?

I purchased spring bulbs from Brecks (not happy - they have a questionable history) and John Scheepers.

I would definitely recommend Scheepers for bulbs, I've purchased from them more than once.

I've never bought plants in pots from them, but I have purchased a lot of full grown orchids from mail order and was very happy with them.

I don't think you assume that they're all bad, you just need to find out what to expect from people who have already ordered from them to see what you're going to get.

I suggest doing a search on GardenWeb.com, I guarantee you someone has asked this question before.

That I know. I can keep them in the garage, or just make a list of what to buy when the time comes.
