Calling All Hashimoto's

A friend just had a m/c @ 7 weeks. She's diagnosed with Hashimoto's but the OB didn't do anything in particular to treat it because her thyroid levels weren't that bad.

Can anyone shed some light on treatment or other relevant things they've picked up along the way as far as how to handle fertility with this diagnosis?

I take synthroid (actually the generic) for mine. My dr would not go ahead with anything until my levels were better. She could always go see an endocrinologist to help her.

Re: Calling All Hashimoto's

I would get a second opinion from an endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid issues. GL

I used to take the generic, Dr. B's BIL prescribed it to me, once I switched to a new endo she was horrified that I was 1. Taking the generic, and 2. That he prescribed me 100mg pills to break in half daily.

She said the generic amount is not exact and breaking the pill further makes it not accurate.

She switched me to Synthroid, a 50mg pill a day and said it is better because it is exactly 50mg a day.

Just thought I should pass along, that in this case the generic isn't the same.

Thanks for the information! I, too, thought by law it has to be the same. I actually asked a nurse and she said they are, or they could not be sold. Who knows?!?!

I dont break the pill though. I take the full pill each morning. I do know that doing that is not a good way of taking meds regularly! Maybe that is okay then!

I don't really know, my endo just said the generic levothyroxine could be anywhere from .25-.75mg when it is supposed to be 50mg. I think because each place that manufactures it has a different guideline?

Maybe she is wrong, but she made me switch immediately.

And yes the snapping of the pills in half never made sense to me, but this Dr. was saying how it would save me money and that if a got a different dose each day it was fine, it would all catch up.

Honestly I don't notice or feel a difference, but thought it was worth mentioning.

I totally get the breaking of the pill not being a good idea. I only have to do it for 1 day though.

I don't have Hashimotos but Hypothyroidism (which I guess could lead to Hashimotos). My endocrinologist said something similar they don't like the generic brand and switched me to synthroid. Do I feel a difference? Not really. Maybe they get a good kickback from the rep for Synthroid.

I thought thyroid was "the issue" but mines been around 2 for the past 4 years and its not that. I have a friend who's had numbers around 8 (mine never got past 4.5) and she had 2 DC naturally (after a failed IUI and IVF).

Well, one more thing I have been reading articles online about Hashimotos/Hypothyroidism and gluten free diets. A lot of info out there with the theory that gluten could be the culprit to a lot of problems (not just celiac) but could be causing the thyroid to go out of whack. It was enough that I decided to give it a try. My numbers seem to only go below 2 when on prednisone (when cycling). I just went two weeks ago and TSH was 1.23. I've been gluten free for 7 months (though I screw up unknowingly here and there...as its almost impossible to do). I honestly haven't told my endo that I am doing this. But, if it stays where it is I will. Would be nice if I could lower my dose. Not sure if its a real effect or just a co-incidence. But, I feel good and have more energy.

A friend of mine has been trying to get me to go GF... it just seemed like a bad time to do such a diet change right as i was starting IVF. My mom has Celiac so i wont have too much a problem if i did do it!

Thank you for all the info! She's not on synthroid, but she does see an endo. She did say she tried GF for a while. I'll pass this on.

I tell you, its a lot easier now than ever before. There are great substitutes that taste like the real thing. I also read a few articles that talked about GF and carrying a baby and it was very positive and that was all I needed to push me into it. And my 10 yr old niece is gluten sensitive and had to go GF and I thought...if she could do it...I could do it...I like more food than she does...LOL...

Re: Calling All Hashimoto's

I'm sorry to crash, but I too, have Hashimoto's and so do both of my sisters and my mother. None of us can take the generic of Synthroid and we all see different endocronologists. When I was placed on athe generic, as silly as it sounds, it didn't work for me. My numbers skyrocketed. Within days of being put on synthroid, my levels came down significantly. My dr said a bunch of different companies make the generic and by doing so, they each have their own recipe (say America's Choice vs. Kirkland chocolate chip cookies). Yes they are both chocolate chip cookies, but they tastr different becausr of their recipes. Problem is when you go to CVS or wherever and refill your script, sometimes you get Kirkland, sometimes you get America's Choice....similar products but not identical. Synthroid is made by one manufacturer so the "recipe" is always the same. Hth

That's interesting. My endo gave me the generic, but told me to only fill it at a supermarket. He specifically said no CVS. I am getting my levels checked in a week. If there is no difference, I am going to inquire about regular synthroid.
