calling all photographers-need help fast-updated-THANK YOU
DH wants to buy me my first SLR
I'm not looking to go pro with it, I'd like something user friendly & with a good quality.
What do you recommend?
Update:
DH got the Nikon D3000 with accessories(bag, memory card, tripod, cleaning kit, 1 hour class) an extra lense, UV filter & polarized filter

Im sure you will be very happy with any of Nikon's or Canon's lower end models.
One rule of thumb for purchasing cameras..is to stick with a company who does cameras. Im not saying that Sony cant put out a good camera...but in general as long as you stick with Nikon or Canon you cant go wrong. (Or pentax or Leica etc)

I vote Nikon. Their repair center is in Melville if you need anything.
I strongly recommend: B&H's used department if you're looking for a deal.
We just bought my niece the D40 (which is now discontinued) for $325.

I have the d40 which I think is now the d3000? barb? But you could def. get a used one. I've been happy with it and am just starting to experiment.

Canon Rebel is a great starter SLR, you can upgrade your glass (lenses) much easier with Canon as well which is really where you should put your money. Upgrade your lens the soonest you can HTH

For a DSLR I'll say a Nikon... if it was a point and shoot definitely a Canon!
I used to work for Nikon, for repairs you can bring it right to their HQ in Melville
