Re: Calling all Trip Reports..
I love reading them as well ... which is why I am obsessed with Tripadvisor.com.
Here's a review I wrote for tripadvisor on my trip to Secrets Excellence Riviera Cancun: (some of the things I reference are in response to previous reviews on the site)
My husband and I recently returned from a week long vacation at SERC (4/24-4/30). We had a wonderful, relaxing trip!
We were upgraded to a swimout room due to a few problems upon check-in that were easily forgotten once they were smoothed out by a wonderful concierge, Humberto. The rooms were as advertised and very comfortable. By far, my favorite aspect was the jacuzzi tub. I took a bath everyday after sitting out in the sun all day which was a welcome retreat. I figured out that by squirting in some of the body wash I had myself a wonderful bubble bath! I'm not sure if I would pay extra for the swimout room, but we did enjoy sitting outside in the lounge chairs and being on ground level. We never did see anyone use the outside jacuzzi tubs so I'm not sure how practical they are.
Both my husband and I were impressed with the food at SERC. We both lived in Manhattan so we are accustomed to quality food and have to say that there was little to complain about. We visited all of the restaurants and found portion size to be fair. It was fun ordering 3 or 4 appetizers! On the first night at Bordeuax, I asked the waiter whether he recommended the veal or the duck -- after a brief pause, he said he'd bring out both and I'd decide! I loved them both. For lunch, my husband and I both loved the chicken quesadillas and beef fajitas served poolside (the guacamole is YUMMY!).
The drinks were fine by me. I stuck with mojitos most of the time. There probably could have been a larger beer selection, but really, why do you need anything but Corona when in Mexico?! ;)
As for the ocean, that was probably the worst part of the resort. It was the first thing I checked out upon arrival and was definitely disappointed. Despite having read every single review here, I held out hope that the seaweed wasn't as bad as some said. It was BAD. The water was unswimmable. The seaweed is not only on the sand, but it's all over in the water, too. The beach itself (the sand area) was fine and we did lounge around there once in a while. If you are big into ocean swimming, this is probably not the place for you. My husband and I both prefer the pool anyway, so it wasn't that big of a deal. All the pools were well maintained and the temperature was perfect!
The staff was friendly and helpful. We did tip here and there but NEVER EVER EVER did we feel like it was expected. In fact, my husband most often had to wait around or track down the waiter to give the tip. We left a tip for the maid every other day, tipped the waitressed by the pool once or twice, and tipped at dinner every night. Keep in mind, these tips were like $2-3. Bottom line for tipping: It's your choice and no pressure.
As for the safety concerns, we did take a few precautions. We didn't leave anything in the safe except for our travel documents. We hid a few pieces of jewelry in an eyeglass case and shoved them down into our dirty clothes bag. We figured no one would want to go through that :) We had no problems whatsoever.
Overall, we had a wonderful vacation. SERC is highly recommended!
