Calling In Sick to Work Dilemma-Long
I work for a small law firm and although we are alotted sick/personal days it is frowned upon to take them. I haven't called in sick since August.
I am supposed to have my glucose screening tomorrow morning at 7am and then I have to file something for work at Richmond Supreme. I told them I'd do the test at 7am so I could come in to work as early as possible.
Now, I just noticed that my driver's license expires in the next week, so I kinda of need to go to the DMV. May I also add that I haven't even changed my name yet on my license and I will be married a year next month.
So, here is my dilemma, I would love to go to the test, go to the DMV, file the papers and then take the rest of the afternoon off, but I feel like I should go to work. We are on trial and my other attorney has a deposition, so really everything falls on me.
I could probably get all three things done and be at work by 12. I just don't know, I am really burned out at work. I am saving my vacation til after I have this baby, so I am at 48 weeks straight that I have worked. It will be 60 before I leave for maternity leave.
I just have such guilt. DH thinks I am crazy, plus he has off tomorrow as it is the last day off of a 3 day swing for him, so I'd probably get to relax with him.
What should I do? What would you do?

I am sure every work situation is different, but I'd say, take the day. You have not taken any time, you have a lot to get done, and you should do it! ( I feel guilty as well if I take a day, but amazingly enough, everyone survives and I catch up the next day.)

You have earned those days and you do not abuse them. It should not be frowned upon, so take the day & relax & rejuvenate!!

Re: Calling In Sick to Work Dilemma-Long
If it were me I would do the glucose, drop off the papers, and go to work the rest of the day.
Then take a long lunch to do the DMV another day during the week. If it all falls on you and you let them down I think they would be really disappointed.

Honestly, they CAN run the office without me, they just choose not to.
The reason why I am trying to go to the DMV tomorrow is b/c I have been saving "I need a couple of hours to do my license" for almost a year. I don't get a lunch. I get to work at 8:30am and leave at 5pm. It makes me nervous that I will have an expired license in a couple of days and I won't get to fix it.

Hi,
I agree with daisy and ValR- take the day. They will survive and honestly its too much pressure to have them so reliant on you that you feel you cant be out.
It took me a long time but now I have no problem putting myself first - they would.

Re: Calling In Sick to Work Dilemma-Long
Just FYI - I took my glucose test in the morning and by the time I got to work I was exhaused b/c of the test. Next time I will probably take a day.

Re: Calling In Sick to Work Dilemma-Long
I would say take the whole day. As much as you want to help out the company you work for, and give them everything, and think they *need* you, at some point you realize that they will lay you off in a heartbeat if someone thinks they can get $10 more of a bonus at the end of the year... Especially in larger companies. You must make yourself and your family your priority. You work to make money for your family. I work hard at my job, and do a very good job, but I don't extend myself beyond what I think is appropriate. My family comes first, and if I need a day off, I take it. I hate sounding like a pessimist and a "stick it to the man" type person, because I'm really not, I've just seen too many cases of companies worrying about executive bonuses over employee loyalty and hard work.

After all you have been through with this Pregnancy I think you have shown youa re a devoted employee and obviously wouldnt take a sick day for just nothing, so no need IMO to feel ANY guilt. Take the day, enjoy it and go back on Tuesday!
