calorie counters on the gym machines...

are they accurate? should i even pay attention to them?

I just started going back to the gym and I really want to start doing the right cardio...but a did the sprint/walk on treadmill for 18 mins and burned less calories then when i went on the bike for 20 mins (on a weightloss course)

and I was dying on the treadmill but not so much on the bike...can that be right?

I am so confused!?

I find that the treadmill is pretty close to my heart rate monitor but still I would never trust those machines because it should be based on height/weight/age etc. Do you have a heart rate monitor?

I usually do not trust them. For me, running one mile is usually 100-110 calories; biking burns a lot less.

Definitely get yourself a heart rate monitor. Those are pretty accurate. I use mine every single time I work out and it is always different (more then) the machine since the machine does not have all required info for a true burn count.

I've always heard they are calculated for a 150 ound man. I used to remember the math on how to adjust it, but can't for the life of me.

when you say sprint/walk - do you mean you do a period of time fast and then walk to recover? If you are doing that, it is proven that you burn more calories AFTER your workout than doing other workouts, so take that into consideration too.

Does the HR monitor count calories for as long as your wearing it or do you have to time it?

Yes it calculates the calories while you are wearing it. You going into "chrono" mode and there is a start and stop button.

Ok good. My work outs contain different exercises (running, weight training, floor exercises) and did not want to start-stop start-stop..looking for something that will count for as long as Im working out.
Thanks
