Re: camera advice
if you can afford it i would recommend getting a digital SLR either a Canon or Nikon.

Re: camera advice
Definately the Nikon D40 SLR- I have the older model but the new one is even better! My mom has it and I am so jealous.

Re: camera advice
It's absolutely worth it.
If you look at it this way - you can buy a digital camera for $300-400. In a few years, you're going to want another one. The digital SLR is the last camera you'll buy.
SLR = Single Lens Reflex (the way the camera takes the picture).
There is NO delay in the shutter. You hit the button, it snaps the picture.

Re: camera advice
if you don't want to go the SLR route, the Canon IS S3 is awesome!
It snaps pictures instantly (no delay), the 12x digital zoom is phenomenal and pictures are great.
We're VERY happy with it.

SO worth it- I can't believe the pics I can take with it. I have saved over $600 in taking DD to professionals to get her pics done.

Re: camera advice
I love SLRs. I have a nice non-digital one that I've used for years. However, with two very mobile, very active kids, I like the fact that I can just pop my point-and-shoot camera in my pocket, pull it out when there's a photo op, close the lens, and put it back in my pocket and run after them... Keep in mind what the purpose of the camera is. If it's mostly for staged photos, SLR is probably the way to go. If you're at the beach or pool a lot, a water resistant camera may be a good idea. I bought a Fuji last year, because of all the specs and reviews I read, it was the fastest time between pressing the button and taking the pic, and the fastest recovery until the next pic. That was the most important factor for me.
Everyone has their favorites for different reasons. It's important to know what you are really looking for. If you ask 10 people for their favorite camera, you'll get at least 11 different opinions...

We just ordered the Canon IS S3 and can't wait to get it. We ordered it after seeing a friend's and the amazing pictures it took.
