Camping with a toddler - help!! (added food question in OP)
We're going camping this weekend with a few other couples and their children. There are cabins, so we're not tenting it ().
Have you ever been camping with a toddler? How hard was it? James is a good kid - he's not likely to go running off on his own and there will be 5 other boys there ranging from his age to 7 years old.
Are there any necessities that we should bring? I have good child-friendly bug spray. There are kitchens in the cabins but no hot water (). Should I bring our monitor so that we can keep an eye on him after he goes to bed and we're sitting aroud the campfire? He'll be in his PNP. Do I need to bring many toys or do you think he'll just have fu exploring and hiking with us? The last time I was camping was with the Girl Scouts many many many moons ago.
Also - each couple is responsible for the food for a different meal - DH and I are in charge of lunch on Saturday. Any ideas for food that is easily transportable - we have a 3 hour drive - that would feed 6 adults (2 are strict vegetarian) and 5 kids (one child is vegeterian and one is severely egg-allergic and another is severly peanut-allergic)
Any suggestions?

Awe... you guys are going to have sooo much fun. I haven't gone in years and it was a bit different then with no kids... LOL
I say bring the monitor for nights when you're sitting by the fire with friends you can keep an eye on him. We use it when we sit outside sand toys (anything that can get dirty and wiped easily or cheap that you can leave there bubbles lots of wipes swim shoes swimmies diapers - if you guys go in the pool or lake sunscreen had extra everything... clothes, blankets, sheets, etc take-n-toss sippy cups tons of snacks portable DVD player (you never know) plus you can play his music or just use pandora through your phone baby tylenol and the rest of the med cabinet lots of plastic and garbage bags Have fun!

i'd definitly bring the monitor for your own peace of mind.
I remember camping with my DD when she was just about 2 and we were tenting it so no monitor. i was walking over every 5 minutes to check on her.

we have a collection of bubbles and shovel and pails from b-day parties. I say bring them so this way you can just toss them at the end. After camping I pretty much want to toss everything
extra towels to sit on and maybe one of those cute beach or lounge chairs for him lots of beer for you and DH!

Re: Camping with a toddler - help!! (added food question in OP)
I went camping with an 8.5 month old when I was 4 months pregnant! If you're not tenting it, I think you should be fine and wont need toys--unless there is one your child is super attached to. There will be lots of activities, people and nature to hold his interest. Bug spray, sunscreen, bottled water, wipes (for quick cleaning up and refershing) and extra clothes.
For food- what about a mix of hot dogs, turkey dogs, and veggie dogs? side of potato salad and some corn. You can keep in all in a cooler. You can also do sandwiches and bring cold cuts, sliced eggplant, roasted peppers, a variety of cheeses and different kids of bread/rolls.
