Can anybody help me? Certification related
Hi! I'm looking to get certified to teach through the individual evaluation route. I am going to be teaching in a private school for the deaf in the city for a while to fulfill the teaching requirement, however I Just realized that the school only goes up to 8th grade, whereas to get certified in phys ed it's K - 12... Does anybody have any suggestions on what I can do? It's the perfect opportunity for me to teach, just don't know what to do, since it's not a high school... Thanks! So upset now!

maybe im misunderstanding what you said
so your school only goes up th 8th grade?
and your certifcation you WANT is k-12
if that is right - it shouldnt matter that your school only goes up to 8th. you dont need to work in every one of those grades inorder to be certified in them.

Re: Can anybody help me? Certification related
I did the "alternate route" certification. I never student taught. Instead, I taught grades 9-12 in a catholic school. I am certified grades 7-12. I did not have a problem. Call Boces if you have any questions about that. At the end of one year, you receive a letter that gets sent to the state that exempts you from student teaching. I had problems because the school I went to undergrad wanted nothing to do with me since I was not student teaching through them. They wouldn't complete my teaching applications with me. I did them on my own, though I found out later that they would have gone quicker through Boces.

Yes, sorry for the confusion. The school only is from K - 8 and to be certified in Phys Ed, the certification is K - 12. I thought on the Office of Teaching Initiatives website it said it had to be in all areas, which is why I asked... On the form that you submit to substitute work experience for student teaching, it says what grades, that's why I'm worried. Thanks for your help! I'll contact Boces on Tuesday

Re: Can anybody help me? Certification related
BOCES is awesome, don't hesitate to speak to them. My certification is Math 7-12, but I only student taught 8th grade because there was no open position for me at the HS. It didn't matter at all, so I wouldn't sweat about it.
Good luck!!
