Thanks love!
My question is...
How come my "NY Taxable Income" shows moneys from my FAGI minus deductions even when I didn't earn it all in NY?
How come it doesn't show just my NY income?
I'm using Turbo Tax...and the proper part-year resident form.
HELP!!
Thanks!

Anyone? Anyone?
I can't help ya w/that - is there a online rep from Turbo Tax that can assist you? I know that if you live a half-year you have to file in NYS, and then claim it for GA.

Re: Can anyone help me? Question regarding NYS taxes while living OOS?
I guess I'm not being clear in my typing.
When the "Bottom Line" comes up, my New York Taxable Income shows a LOT more income than I earned in NY. So it shows my GA income too.
Then, when I did my GA income, it shows a LOT less income than I earned in GA. Although it shows:
Federal Taxable : $ Georgia Taxable: $
The NY one doesn't show that...
Grrrrrr!!

I think it might automatically calculate the difference. If you paid more in NY, then you'll pay less in GA.

You would think that, right?! The NY portion STINKS!! I worked in NY for 4 months, in GA for 8...so most of the $$ was earned in GA. Yet my "NY Taxable Income" is a LOT!! And the GA one is not.
I'm hating this. I wanted to file tonight.

NY has different tax brackets and different credits. I know, I know...I worked less in CT than NY and filed HIGHER in CT than NY...so it's possible. I went through an accountant.

Re: Can anyone help me? Accountants? Question regarding NYS taxes while living OOS?
sorry, deleted my previous post, this is much more helpful
Part-year residents follow each state's rules. Some states separate the income, and tax only their state's income. Or a state may calculate the tax on all income as if you are a resident and then allocate the tax based on "in state sources/all sources."
Regardless of whether you're a part-year resident or a nonresident in the state where you are working, you will probably need to complete an apportionment schedule. This form can usually be found in the state's part-year or nonresident income tax return. You use the apportionment schedule to figure out how much of your income is taxable in each state.
Part-year residents not only pay tax on income earned from work performed in the state, but also pay tax on all other income received while residing in the state. Nonresidents generally only pay tax on income they earned from work performed in the state and on income received from other sources within the state.

You must have put the state incomes in the wrong boxes...try to go back and try again....
Each of your state forms must show the income for the right state....
example
you made 10K in NY, then under NYS wages you put 10K, you made 20K in NJ, then you put 20k under the NJ wages...
Your federal form will then show the income from both states and therefore 30K in taxable income...
Agreed...you probably entered your W-2 info incorrectly.

Thank you both!!
I'm going back to check.
It says that my Federal AGI is the same as my NYS income. That's wrong.

try calling me after 9. I'll make Leo help you.
I so won't do that, you crazy? No quiero molestar.
But I found this:
To figure your New York taxable income, we start with your federal adjusted gross income, transferred from your federal return. Then we make certain adjustments (additions or subtractions) due to differences between federal and New York tax law. TurboTax calculates these adjustments based on information from your federal return and the additional questions we ask you.
-So this is how they get the number, but it doesn't make sense at all because my NY income is much higher than what it actually was!!

Does your W-2 have the NY & CT amounts broken out? That's what should show on your NY & CT returns (assuming you don't have any other state adjustments). I hope I'm making sense here...it's so difficult to explain on-line...

It's NY and GA, and yes, they're broken out. On the Federal part they're entered individually, with the state being marked from box 15 on all 4 W-2's (Married, Filing Jointly).
But the New York Taxable Income is my Federal AGI minus the Standard Deduction and Personal Exemptions. This concerns me because the amount is huge and not what I earned in NY at all since it includes all my Federal money.
Does it make sense?
It IS hard to explain online.
Thanks everyone for trying to help!
