what about an ebay drive-- where people bring in stuff and then all the proceeds go to them??
or-- since it's Spring-- people can sponsor you in a run, or a 10K walk or something.

We had a fund raiser and did a 50-50 raffle. It was a HUGE hit.

You could do a big garage sale - ask people to donate stuff and all the $$ you make goes to the family.
I did penny drives for a fundraiser in college. Ask everyone you know for all their pennies and tell them where the money is going. We actually raised a few hundred dollars this way b/c people don't mind giving a small amount.

You can try to get a firehouse or knights of columbus to donate a night. Explain the situation to them. A murder mystery dinner is also a good way to raise money.
