Can anyone help with somewhat a complicated computer problem? LONG
When I used my laptop yesterday morning I dont think I the program I was using completely closed and then I hit the turnoff button and closed the laptop. When I to try to restart it a black screen comes up with white writing and it says something to the effect that it wasn't sucessful in restarting and to pick the following functions Safe Mode Safe Mode with Networking Safe Mode with Command Prompt Last Known Good Configuration Start Windows Normally
I then have 25 seconds to pick one. If I hit Start Windows Normally it will go through the opening process where the windows logo comes on and the little bar underneath it and is processing then a blue screen flashes and but instead of all this writing being throughout the page it is only a quarter.
Sorry this is long but I know their are a few IT people on here and I was hoping someone could walk me through this before I call someone.
Thanks Adrianna

Ahhh the Blue screen of Death! I would of started it in safe mode (will make your screen look funny) then after it boots up shut it down to a power off pull all power including the battery. Then put the power and battery back on and boot up. You should not see any issues after that

That's good advice. If you do continue seeing the blue screen, write down what it says (the words, not all the codes and numbers) and paste it here.

The blue screen only comes up for a a second, you cant even read it. When I put it into Safe Mode will it shut off by itself or do I need to do it manually?

You have to shut down manually if you open in safe mode.
I know for our computers here, if we get the Blue Screen of Death we do a hard shut down and then restart the computer as normal.

I got the blue screen of death a few weeks ago and posted for help here. I was not able to do a recovery and lost everything.... which included pictures from Christmas time on. I ended up having ot reload the entire windows operating system, but I am still not able to use my computer. I need certain drivers and such and I am still not able to configure it to connect to my internet. I am so at a loss!
I hope you can figure it out!

That really stinks that you lost those pictures. I keep hearing DH's voice in the back of my head "did you put the pictures on a disk or on shutterfly?"
The blue screen that everyone is taking about, is it just a flash or do you actually see the info. Also what is it caused by.

Re: Can anyone help with somewhat a complicated computer problem? LONG
The Blue Screen of Death (or BSOD) can be caused by a million things, they're all different. Sometimes it gets into a constant loop where you see it for a split second, and then it reboots.
You guys didn't add any new hardware into the computer, did you? Upgrade ram, add a CD burner, anything like that?
Also, do you have the original operating system CD that came with the computer? If so, you can pop that into the CD ROM, and you can try to "Repair" your installation. In my experience though, that doesn't help all that often.
If you do wind up bringing it to someone, ask them to see if they can save your files. You will have to tell them where the important stuff is, and maybe mention doing it through DOS.
My Dad has raved about the guys CompUSA and I've heard good things about the GeekSquad at BestBuy.
Good luck!!

Re: Can anyone help with somewhat a complicated computer problem? LONG
My blue screen came up after seeing the Windows XP logo, but before actually going into Windows. I tried using the installation disk to do a repair and it didn't work....
The blue screen stayed and had some message about a corrupt DLL file.
I lost pictures from the last 2 months, but I did have *some* of them loaded on to Shutterfly, that was my only saving grace.
It's been a few weeks, I am still using DH's computer while mine sits there.

I didn't instal anything but not sure about DH (I dont think he did). When he looked at it he thought it looks like it not registering anymore. Hopefully the guy I use to work with can fix it for me. Thank you all for your help.
